Former first lady Laura Bush has broken with her husband on the premier social issues of his administration and said she backs gay marriage and abortion.
After more than eight years of silence on the controversial issues, Mrs. Bush said in an interview with CNN's Larry KingTuesday, that gay marriage and abortion were points of contention with her husband, former President George W. Bush.
Mrs. Bush in recent weeks has been promoting her memoir "Spoken from the Heart," in which she writes about her life both before and after becoming first lady.
In response to a question about gay marriage, she said, "There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman. But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."
Mrs. Bush said she and the ex-president "disagree" on legalizing same-sex marriage.

No one is making you watching her interviews and you don’t have to buy her book.
ABC News. The same network that brings the show “Cougar Town”.
That is my opinion after having watched the video. You are entitled to yours.
Laura W. Bush has a desire like her husband and her in-laws to get a Democrat to say something nice about her.
I think both the father and son did a much better job in the office of the Presidency than Obama is doing.
Good thing she never ran for president.
I have had enough of the Bush family...time to move on.
She is more well read than most college professors teaching today.
No worries there dear.
Me either and the family has embraced the rapist former President.
You can’t trust any of them.
She disagreed with her husband on these issues and didn't change his mind or policy on either abortion or so called Gay marriage.
I certainly don't agree with her on these issues, but she is free to think, believe as she wishes.
I seldom read books written by/for politicians.
The exception was Donald Rumsfeld. I read two books written about Rummy.
BTW, has Rummy written his memoirs?

How much else is different from what she says?
I can hear the cash registers snapping shut. NO SALE
“I have never understood how any woman who has had children could be in favor of abortion.”
True dat. I wonder if she’s ever looked at her daughters and said “ I sure am glad I had the option to abort you two. I chose not to at the time, but I’m glad I could have.”
It really shocks me that so many people believe in gay marriage. To me that shows a severe flaw in character.
That being said, I'm glad Laura was not activist during her time in the White House and she ALWAYS acted on the public stage with class. But it's shocking to me that she's for gay marriage.
Well, she did go on the Ellen Degenerate Show, so she must have some sympathies in that direction.
“She is more well read than most college professors teaching today. “
I would have used another comparison if I were you ;-)
Sickening.
Hmmm, The dear Mrs. Bush and Lillian Carter are both poster gals for absinthe and eternal maidenhood.
Gays have all the same “rights” in this country as heteros.
They don’t have a right to be blessed by the church.
Unborn children have less rights than gays under the eye of the law.
