Former first lady Laura Bush has broken with her husband on the premier social issues of his administration and said she backs gay marriage and abortion.
After more than eight years of silence on the controversial issues, Mrs. Bush said in an interview with CNN's Larry KingTuesday, that gay marriage and abortion were points of contention with her husband, former President George W. Bush.
Mrs. Bush in recent weeks has been promoting her memoir "Spoken from the Heart," in which she writes about her life both before and after becoming first lady.
In response to a question about gay marriage, she said, "There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman. But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."
Mrs. Bush said she and the ex-president "disagree" on legalizing same-sex marriage.

The GOP is doing a fine job all on it’s own.
Compassionate conservatism = liberalism.

Fair enough. Still, she didn’t run for office, her husband did.
I think we all assumed she was pro-life etc. though.

Epic fail...but not totally unexpected from a family of RINOs!
Well this is one of the occasions where I would point out the favorable contrast between the disappointing abortion views of Laura Bush with the unabashedly pro-life views of Sarah Palin.
In an alternate universe, I have a sad suspicion that had Laura Bush been married to Todd Palin, that little Trig would never have seen the light of day.
I remain disenchanted with Sarah Palin's political metamorphosis as she moves closer to the RINO-darkside of the GOP, but I continue to respect her views on the sanctity of life, and that she personally put her money where her mouth is in that regard.

As I have found through the years, many people who think this way have a family member that is a homo.

OMG, did you hit the nail on the head!
It has been my lifelong observation, that if a guy wants to get laid, all he has to do is find a liberal female in some club or bar, sometimes he won't even have to buy her a drink, just promise her one, but if a guy is looking for a life partner, as in a wife, head to your local Baptist church and date one of the ladies in the choir, seldom can you go wrong that way.

Damn it. < scratches Laura Bush’s book off my list for next time I go to B&N or Borders >

That’s kinda like walking in on your wife as your best friend climbs on top of her, but before they have sex, and saying, “Oh, it was only relevant for a minute.” The issue is trust.

I agree that Palin’s pro life position is laudable. But for me, Pro-life is a PREREQUISITE for my vote, NOT a panacea.

I think so too.
Even so, I believe she owed to her husband's party (and to her husband's memory) to keep it to herself. Bet the "View", ect. will be having fun with this one, as if I care.

You just eliminated 90+ percent of the flakes by doing just that!
Good post!

IIRC, she and George had the girls *after* dealing with infertility and undergoing some sort of treatment to get pg (not sure if it was IVF or what)—having gone through infertility and learning INTIMATELY exactly what is involved in getting pregnant (one million things have to be in place or it doesn’t happen) and how precious life in the womb is—it is stunning to hear something like this from the mother of TWINS. I’m so disappointed. :*(

Because the majority of women are pro-abortion. That is the ONLY reason baby murdering is still legal.

Simple solution --- DON'T VOTE FOR HER.
Oh yeah I forgot... she's not running.
To: Southnsoul
I haven’t lost ALL respect—she was still a thousand times better than that high-belt-wearing mama to 2 ‘mistakes’ we have in the White House as FLOTUS now! That said, I’ll never look at Laura Bush in the same way ever again. Probably never listen to her interviews or read her books or articles either. < sighs >
