For a long time, Meg Whitman rode high in the polls in her effort to win the Republican nomination in California for Governor. Over the last month, her position has suddenly eroded, according to a new Survey USA poll, and now she finds herself in a dead heat with insurance commissioner Steve Poizner. Now the former eBay CEO has to fight hard to hold onto a nomination that most people assumed she would win, with the primary just around the corner:
Not long ago Meg Whitman had such a huge lead 50 points over Steve Poizner for the GOP nomination for governor, many folks thought the race was over and started sizing up her chances against the Democrats Jerry Brown.
When she came in to talk to our Editorial Board last week, Whitman brushed off news that some polls showed Poizner had closed the gap to about 10 points. Still 10 points isnt anything to scoff at, especially with only a little more than a month before the polls open.
Well, this week ABCs SurveyUSA poll shows that Poizner is now 2 points behind her 39 percent to 37 percent.
The poll itself shows Poizner advancing on all fronts. He only trails Whitman by seven points among women, perhaps the most eye-opening result of all. He wins voters under the age of 50, and wins Hispanic voters as well. Poizner also edges Whitman among those voters who self-identify as conservatives, 41/38.

The simple truth is this: Both Poizner and Whitman are cut from the same Rino cloth and BOTH have contributed to Democrats. The difference is Poizner has POSITIONED himself to the right of Whitman especially with his support of the AZ immigration law and with the powerful backing of Tom McClintock who is extremely popular with CA GOP primary voters.
Whitman, I think, is the more dynamic candidate and has a lot sound policy ideas including much needed welfare reform. If she could run CA half as well as she ran Ebay, CA would benefit.
Right now I am planning to vote for Poizner, because he supports AZ’s new law and Whitman opposes it.
I hope Mc goes after frankenstein next.
He cut spending and jobs at the Department of Insurance. He can’t be all bad or as bad as Meg IMO.
I haven’t seen any of those ads. But knowing that McClintock supports Poizner goes a long way in my book.
I was really having a hard time deciding who to vote for in the primary (a “lesser of two evils” type of choice as far as I could tell), but now I feel better about going with Poizner. (And Whitman’s atrocious voting record didn’t help her any in my book.)
He’s a liberal who’s trying to convince everyone that he suddenly became a conservative, just in time for the primary.
That being said, he’s arguably better than Whitman.
Whitman was never close to a conservative. Her track record at ebay is the window to her non-conservative sole.
Those McClintock ads have been pretty darn good.
Question: do you have any experience with ebay? Whitman most certainly did not run it well.
Mitt Romney’s favorite executive at EBAY has taken a mighty tumble. Boy if it were Palin’s endorsed candidate there would be 10 threads up now trashing her for her lack of judgment, but Romney apparently gets a pass because it is not his fault that Whitman is incompetent.
Whitman is a Mittwit.
No, I don’t use it. You probably know a lot more about it than I do. I do know it is one of the most dynamic companies in CA which grew tremendously on her watch and helped create thousands of jobs and businesses.
I do think government should be run more like a business, and less like Greece or Tammany Hall which is the case in Sacramento.
In the final analysis there is not much of a difference between Poizner and Whitman. Poizner’s support of AZ and Whitman’s opposition has pushed me more into his camp. Illegal immigration is CA’s biggest problem. We also need to cut taxes here. Drill for oil. Turn the water back on for the farmers. Make CA more business friendly, attract jobs and cut government spending. Those are my big issues.
I just heard a radio ad stating that the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has endorsed Whitman. That’s sure to carry some weight with voters.
Meg said, during the debate last week, that she supported the Gun Control law that would make open carry illegal. I will not vote for her.
That state is a total loss.
Rasmussen has them both losing to Brown in the general, Poizner by 18 points.
If Poizner wins the primary, it’s Governor Moonbeam for 4 years. Good luck with that.
I do not have a TV. Those myriad radio ads are welcomed vis-a-vis keeping that audio radiance a wavin’ but her ads every five minutes are driving me nuts. Farewell, Ms Whitman — or just fare.. please!
Fresh meat for Moonbeam, IMHO.
