* Google's Android OS in 28 pct of U.S. smartphones in Q1
* Apple U.S. iPhone share 21 pct in Q1
* Research in Motion retains No. 1 rank with 36 pct share
SAN FRANCISCO, May 10 (Reuters) - Google Inc (GOOG.O) displaced iPhone maker Apple Inc (AAPL.O) to become the second most popular provider of smartphone software in the United States during the first quarter, the latest sign of the increasing competition in the fast-growing mobile market.
Smartphones featuring Google's Android operating system accounted for 28 percent of U.S. smartphone unit sales in the first quarter according to NPD Group, behind top-ranked Research in Motion (RIM.TO), maker of the Blackberry phone, which had a 36 percent share of the market.
Smartphones, which allow consumers to surf the web, send email and run specialized applications on wide, color screens, are increasingly replacing no-frills cell phones for many U.S. consumers.
The devices have become a prime battleground for a variety of tech companies seeking to ensure a good position in the evolving market.
Last month, Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ.N) said it would pay $1.2 billion to acquire Palm Inc (PALM.O), which sells two smartphone models based on its WebOS operating system. Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), whose Windows operating system is used in the majority of the world's PCs, unveiled a pair of smartphones last month and recently launched a revamped version of its mobile operating system.

You may want to watch this. That's Flash running very nicely on Android right there, kicking butt and taking names.

You can spin all you want, but these NPD figures in this thread, are NOT for devices in use or advertising hits. They are for actual Android smartphone US sales in the first quarter of this year, versus iPhone and RIM smartpone sales.
And NPD is about the most respected outfit in the country for measuring device sales. Just this Thursday, NPD will give is video game console and games sales for the month of April, like they have been doing for the past 15 years.
No.
You are wrong.
“Original iPhone owners BOUGHT their iPhones outright and AT&T did not pay Apple any subsidy for them at all”
Apple themselves confirmed they were getting payments from AT&T right here:
“Oppenheimer confirmed that Apple is receiving payments from AT&T related to the sale of iPhones, but he didn't want to discuss the specifics of the agreement between the two companies”
http://news.cnet.com/Apple-earnings-soar-as-iPhone-shipments-revealed/2100-1047_3-6198872.html?tag=mncol;txt
“Silicon Alley Insider spotted a research note from Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster estimating that Apple is receiving $18 per month for each iPhone subscriber, under the revenue-sharing agreement between the two companies.
-snip-
That would mean that over the life of a two-year contract, AT&T will pay Apple $432 per iPhone subscriber"

The Good news is, smartphone companies are now happily using Android for free, and phone companies are watching superb Android phones like the HTC Incredible, HTC Desire and soon the HTC EVO 4G fly off the shelves, without them having to pay an arm and a leg to anyone, or give in to Apple's “it's my way or the high way” policy. Consumers win.
Still doesn’t address my other point. Why would anybody want that memory hog on their mobile device? It is a rarity that video isn’t in multiple formats so I can never conceive of a situation where I would feel I needed to load that albatross on my Droid.
I’ll let you have Flash. No thanks.
Oh, I dunno, maybe because about 75% of all internet video is Flash? Ya s'pose that might have something to do with it?
As I already stated sparky, it is rare that you can find a video on the net that isn’t coded in multiple video formats, so there is no “need” to have Flash. If you want it more power to you, but the “75% of all internet video is Flash” is a straw man designed to fool those with little intellectual ability. I’m guessing you bought the straw man.
According to.... you? ...sparky?
Pfffft.
Interactive games on the web? Probably Flash.
Dynamic video on a web page? Probably Flash.
Downloading an actual video file, yeah, it'll probably be MP4, WMV, MJPEG/MOV, etc.
You can hate Flash all you want, but the fact remains that a large portion of the Internet still depends on it to make their stuff look pretty.
RE: According to.... you?
According to fact
Flash is fine. It is just a memory hog. There are other less intrusive ways of streaming video.
I will make a bet now that Flash will never work right on mobile devices once it is fielded.
Wow. I wasn't aware that you are the Keeper of Facts.
It seems odd that in my own experience, and that of the 300 users I support, the bulk of website video is Flash.
Maybe we're using a different Internet than you?
It works fine on Windows Mobile 6.5, and has worked on Windows Mobile for years.
Closed development vs open development....no brainer for techies...
Facts are like truth slick. They just are what they are and are not subject to opinion. Just because you deny the truth of the facts means very little to me. Continue to march on in your ignorance. Bye.
Hee hee! You're a riot, Bub.
The point you seem to be missing is that your claim is not fact. Not even close.
Go on thinking whatever you like and being baffled about Droid users wanting Flash.
I suppose blind people wonder why all the fuss over color too.
RE: Hee hee! You’re a riot, Bub.
I’m not a riot. I’m just right.
And by the way...I am a Droid user.
