Police break up UC Berkeley hunger strike

BERKELEY — UC Berkeley police this morning peacefully dispersed a gathering of hunger strikers who have been camped out on campus for a week, but protesters say they plan to continue their efforts.

Students and others have been protesting on the front lawn of California Hall since last Monday. The 19 individuals on the hunger strike have demands of denouncing racist legislation in Arizona, creating a sanctuary on campus and ending retaliation against student and worker activists.

A rally has been planned today at 3:30 p.m. to increase the pressure on the administration. In addition, regularly scheduled demonstrations have been held daily at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

We will update this story when further details are available.

You would want to use food to break up a hunger strike, not tofu. I would have gone with grilling steaks upwind but real smoked bacon would work.

The hippies on our campus went on a Hunger Strike to protest the goings on in South Africa (this was the early 90s). They had a "camp" on the quad.... all sorts of nonsense.

A few friends and I sat on the library steps and ate pizza in front of them. Likely the best pizza I've ever had. :-)

It would be interesting to find out who the “leaders” of this type of protest are. They could probably be linked with some money man like Soros, maybe the unions or those of influence in La Raza.?

Force feeding conscious individuals in possession of their faculties (Not that I believe liberals are.) is wrong. Causing them to break fast of their own will is not.

I am told by a vegetarian friend that beef steaks over charcoal are tough to resist. (She is vegetarian for dietary reasons and does not proselytize.)
