The Naval amphibious ship San Diego was launched Friday in Pascagoula, Miss., one of the first steps in the journey toward its namesake city.

The San Diego is the fourth Navy vessel to be named for the city. It will be delivered to the Navy in 2011, but may not show up its home port of San Diego until 2012.

The 684-foot amphibious transport dock ship will be christened in June. As pictured, it is 75 percent complete.

The new ship follows a pretty big wake. A prior Navy craft named San Diego achieved fame in World War II, when it engaged the enemy 34 times and never lost a sailor.

In recognition of her service, that San Diego, a light cruiser, was chosen to be the first allied warship to enter Tokyo Bay at the war’s end.

That may be the most magnificent looking LDP, I have ever seen. What a handsome ship.

"When do we see the Murtha?"

Hopefully never. Absent that, probably 7-10 years. She's got 3 or 4, maybe even 5 in front of her at the yard. Her keel probably won't be laid down for another two years. Then, another 6 before she's commissioned, give or take.

I was on the USS San Diego AFS-6 back in the mid 70’s. I think it is now TFS-6 but not sure.
