Properly attired indeed! My parents used the term “seen in public” when selecting appropriate attire. Having arrived in America with nothing but a suitcase and the clothes on her back, my mother required us to “dress up” whenever we traveled because she didn’t want people to think were a “bunch of refugees.”
Let me give you the Italian ( at least my family ) version of that. It persists to this day in our vernacular:
“You wanna look like you just got off the boat?”
“I think you had better hurry up and change, because you look like you just got off the boat. Before Dad gets here.”
“You had a long night, I see. You better pull yourself together, because you look like you just got off the boat.”
