S. Korea's Lee calls unprecedented meeting with commanders to counter 'belligerent' North

South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak has ordered the military to become stronger to counter North Korea, saying the sinking of the South's warship was likely caused by its "belligerent" communist neighbor.

In a show of his determination to overhaul the country's "loosened" defense posture, Lee convened a meeting of top military commanders on May 4. It was the first time in the nation's history that a president had done so.

At the meeting, Lee vowed to take "definite, stern" action against those responsible for the sinking.

The 1,200-ton Cheonan, a Navy corvette, exploded and sunk on March 26 during a routine patrol near the tense border with North Korea. Fifty-eight of the ship's 104 crewmen were rescued before the ship sank but 46 others were killed. South Korean investigators say the ship was most likely attacked by a mine or a torpedo from a North Korean submarine.

"As soon as this incident occurred, I had an intuition that it was a grave international issue involving inter-Korean relations and ordered that the cause should be found out through international cooperation," Lee said, as he presided over the unprecedented meeting that was televised nationwide.

"What has become clear so far is that the Cheonan sinking was not a simple accident," Lee said, hinting that North Korea was behind it.

The sinking "reawakened South Koreans to the reality that there is the world's 'most belligerent' state armed with long-range artillery just 50 kilometers away," he said, implicating the North in the sinking. The incident also reminded South Koreans that "a threat that shatters our prosperity and stability can come in a way we cannot imagine," he said.

They know that North Korea is trying to get them to attack them so they can claim self defense and invade.

North Korea is taking advantage of Obama’s perceived/real weakness.

Absolutely, but don’t you smell a setup?

11 Battalions of North Korea Special Forces moved to the border, or did you miss the news?

Remember, North Korea started this mess by sinking a ship and killing 46 ROKN sailors. What North Korea did is an act of war. Their is 1.2 million North Koran troops and their is no indication that they preparing for war.

I forgot something. There are ROK towers on the DMZ and there is no indication of a massive troop movement

That is true, we all know it.

That hasn’t stopped the North Koreans in the past and the Chinese from playing dumb when it is convenient.

Obama’s team was meeting with China recently, but wouldn’t even dare to bring up the subject directly that North Korea attacked South Korea.

They knew that China didn’t want to acknowledge this incident and therefore wimped out.

I smell a setup.

True, but what does the North have to lose?
This is Seoul

...in 30 minutes NK can flatten it. On the other hand you can't just ignore the sinking of your ship, it's an act of war. It just sucks to be the SK commander in chief right now.

I think that President Lee is rapidly coming to the conclusion that any contact with the North is over. The north killed 47 sailors.

I think that President Lee needs to do something about this matter and to hit the North with a heavy hand. His commanders seem to agree with my sentiments.

Yes, if I was him, I would do something covert to punish the North.

Don’t try to sate hurt pride in the open, send a message. Everyone will know who it was, but at the same time everyone can play dumb.

I agree with the covert one. Imagine if a few North Korean ships full of sailors sink ‘mysteriously’ ?

Yea, we just all stand back and can say “What a terrible accident, of course we will offer assistance in the form of body bags”
