Let's call the movement "Leaving Arizona." In fits and starts, Americans are looking to hurt Arizona -- which last month passed a draconian immigration law -- where it hurts the most: the pocketbook.
Major League Baseball, with large numbers of Hispanic players, is being pressured to move the 2011 All-Star Game from Phoenix. Some teams, including the White Sox, are being urged to move spring training from Arizona. And on Wednesday, the Phoenix Suns' jerseys read "Los Suns" "to honor our Latino community and the diversity of our league, the state of Arizona and our nation," said owner Robert Sarver, who referenced "a flawed state law."
Outside sports, there is a call to boycott Arizona-based companies, including US Airways and U-Haul, and conferences scheduled for Arizona are being canceled. The goal is to pressure Arizona to roll back an unjust assault on immigrants -- both legal and illegal. The law requires police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal, opening the door for racial profiling.
If you are as appalled by this law as we are, we urge you to rethink that golf trip to Scottsdale or that condo rental in Tucson. Instead, spend your dollars in a state that respects civil liberties.
A similar economic boycott in the early 1990s, including the decision to pull the 1993 Super Bowl out of Phoenix, helped push Arizona into recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There's no reason a boycott over immigration can't produce the same results.
We sympathize with Arizona on one point. Our immigration system is profoundly broken and needs a fix. But it's up to Congress to pass a just and comprehensive immigration reform law. That vital work shouldn't be left up to rogue states like Arizona.
Be sure to read the comments. They are amazingly on-target and really put the Sun-Times nambys in their place (the high chair).
And it’s a US law signed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the patron saint of big-government liberals, that requires all alines to carry their registration papers with them at all time, and to register annually with the federal government. Oh, the irony!! Irony, it’s so ironical!
Boycott Arizona and I wonder how many hotel maids, kitchen staff, yard workers, etc. will have to pack up and go back to their countries of origin?
Excellent!
My home state is not just a red state, it's a ROGUE state!
Just a humble thought, but I'm beginning to think the new "Fort Sumter" against Obama and his federal fascism will be Arizona.
I was very surprised that the picture from the infamous “Los Suns (Sols)” game on the front of the Arizona Republic yesterday showed a man who appeared to be Hispanic (a little “racial profiling” there) holding up a sign at the game that said, “Play B-Ball, Not Politics”. That’s very unusual coming from the Arizona Republic.
Boycott the CUBS! They Stink! Get rid of Pinella, Lee,and Ramiraz. They stink!
I receive many (many many) snail mails per week asking for money, donations, etc., I send their requests back in the stamped envelopes provided with this message: “Move to Arizona and I might send you a buck”.
Trying to talk the wife into an AZ vacation this summer. Got to support these people. I did send an email to the governor to tell her their new law will make me MORE likely, not less to go there.
lol. Now they're just making stuff up.
This is unbelievable...MSNBC
Arizona....A Pinal County Sheriffs deputy was shot in the stomach Friday by an undocumented immigrant according sheriffs officials. Lt. Tami Villar told 12 News that the search and rescue deputy was investigating a load of marijuana in the desert and was confronted by five suspects.
MSNBCs Tamron Hall: The Pinal County sheriff released the 911 tapes the injured deputy made, in response to what he called growing speculation that the shooting was staged. On another note, the Deputy Sheriff told the 911 operator to tell his wife that he loves her, in fear that he was not going to make it.
MSNBC says the shooting was probably staged ????????
What idiots we have in so-called news channels today....
It is being reported that a batch of lettuce is causing ecoli...A recall has been made and people are being warned about lettuce and vegetables from...guess where????
Arizona...
Is it a coincidence or conspiracy???
If you do go to Arizona, make sure you include Sedona and a drive up the Apache Trail is awesome. Tutti Santi’s Italian restaurant in Scottsdale has great food. Owner/manager (at least 70 years old) must have been an opera singer because if you’re lucky, she’ll do an aria - just spectacular. Go early - always jammed packed.
Yet, wasn’t Murder Capital Chicago calling for the National Guard to protect its citizens
Illinois is flat busted broke and this is just the usual scapegoating to try and detract from a collapsing welfare state known as Illinois.
They were great.
Ping!
These illegals are moving to ILLINOIS!!
Please make a note of it!
Arizona is a “rogue” state? Hmmm, what does that make Illinois? I live behind the Iron Curtain of Illinois and all one needs to do to see how well Illinois does is go to any big river town and see the difference between Illinois poverty and sloth and Iowa prosperity and productivity. It is about as clear as the difference between east and west Berlin were. So, where the hell does some clown from Chicago get off calling Arizona a “rogue” state? Oh yeah, Chicago is home town to the little dictator...
