Boston beaned for Arizona boycott
Boston Herald ^ | 5/7/10 | Dave Wedge

City councilors who passed a boycott of Arizona businesses over the state’s new immigration law are being targeted by angry opponents from across the country who are delivering blistering insults to the Hub pols.

“There’s been some profanities and some of the e-mails have been over the top,” Council President Michael Ross said. “I don’t take it personally, but I don’t think it’s necessary. It comes with the turf.”

Ross and other councilors who passed a measure aimed at banning Arizona businesses have been deluged with e-mails and calls from vocal, and often angry, opponents.

“There are a lot of passionate people who we respectfully disagree with. That’s what happens in a democracy,” Ross said. “They are sounding off, as is their right. But I feel that we still did the right thing.”

James Chisholm, spokesman for Councilor Ayanna Pressley, said her office also received reams of messages, including some that used “derogatory terms” and ethnic slurs.

Both councilors said the bulk of angry messages came from out of state, while many Bostonians supported the action.

The council passed the measure in response to the new Arizona law that allows police to demand citizenship papers from people upon “reasonable suspicion” - a move opponents argue is a blow to civil liberties.

The council’s boycott mimicked similar moves in other major cities, including New York, Seattle, San Diego and St. Paul, Minn.

In lockstep with the council, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino took swift action yesterday, firing off a letter to nFocus, an Arizona company that provides software to the Boston Centers for Youth & Families. Menino wrote that the law has “taken a step in the wrong direction for millions of people in this country” and asked the company to reject it.

He said he is reviewing all contracts with Arizona-based companies.

“But I feel that we still did the right thing.” Doing the right thing means supporting the American people, not the illegals.

Isn`t passing economic laws against another State a DIRECT violation of the Commerce Clause?

In this case the violation is too obvious for the courts to care. The Commerce clause only matters when the issues are connected by a thread.

So let me get this straight, the State of Arizona passes a law to UPHOLD a FEDERAL LAW, and now these liberal cities in these liberal states want to boycott Arizona. Basically it is becoming state against state. And dear leader is right there, taking the side of illegal aliens, over law abiding, tax-paying citizens.

All makes perfect sense. /sarcasm

Hey, all we hear from dog owners is kids get killed by pitbulls because the owners are bad owners right? Well, for once, a pitbull gets killed because of bad owners. Stop your whining, I never hear the outrage and crying over the kids constantly being killed.

Either the street runs both ways or it doesn’t.

Memo to Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino:

Sir,

Arizona’s SB1070 mirrors Federal law. I request you insititute the same sanctions against the Federal Government that you have proposed for the State of Arizona.

Will you please inform me when you have broken all ties with Washington, D.C., and when we can expect your share of Federal tax dollars to start flowing elsewhere?

Yours respectfully,
HiJinx

Review away Mayor Thomas. Arizona can send it's software business swiftly to Texas.

The politicians in Boston need to worry about Boston. We’ll take care of Arizona. I’m a little pissed off that these so-called patriotic Americans are siding with the foreigners against Americans.

I heard that Arizona’s professional sports teams have protested the new ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION laws. Who really needs to watch professional sports anyway? Who really wants to pay these people tens of millions of dollars every year for playing a game? If I could have my way I’d turn it around and boycott Arizona’s bassaball team, as well as the Diamond backs. Let their stadium seats be empty so they’ll have to leave the state and look for somebody who really wants them. Make the owners of these teams go broke, we have that power. We can make this the beginning of the end of the WORSHIP of professional athletes.

All of those callers need to call back and instead deliever the message that they are boycotting Boston themselves and will do all f their shopping outside of the city/state. That should be enough toget them to open their eyes that there are consequences to their silly actions.

I love how they minimize the criticism they are receiving, because it is coming from out of state, but they have no problem interjecting themselves into an Arizona issue.

It was posted on the proper thread. FR hiccups sometimes and posts get doubled on threads that have nothing to do with the topic at hand. Just a quirk.
