20 Things You Will Need To Survive When The Economy Collapses And The Next Great Depression Begins

(This is a guest post from The Economic Collapse Blog.)

Today, millions of Americans say that they believe that the United States is on the verge of a major economic collapse and will soon be entering another Great Depression. But only a small percentage of those same people are prepared for that to happen. The sad truth is that the vast majority of Americans would last little more than a month on what they have stored up in their homes.

Most of us are so used to running out to the supermarket or to Wal-Mart for whatever we need that we never even stop to consider what would happen if suddenly we were not able to do that. Already the U.S. economy is starting to stumble about like a drunken frat boy. All it would take for the entire U.S. to resemble New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina would be for a major war, a terror attack, a deadly pandemic or a massive natural disaster to strike at just the right time and push the teetering U.S. economy over the edge. So just how would you survive if you suddenly could not rely on the huge international corporate giants to feed, clothe and supply you and your family? Do you have a plan?

Are you prepared?

I hate to pour cold water on everybody but the fact is that if civilization truly falls apart, those who are the most prepared will be among the first people that the bad guys come after.

Anybody running generators and electric lights will attract the bad guys like a streetlight attracts moths on a hot summer night. You will quickly be surrounded and your fate will be sealed.

Guns and ammo will only delay the inevitable. Hungry and desperate people will simply wait until the ammo runs out and then they will close in...and if you took out a bunch of them in the meantime, they won't exactly be in a neighborly mood when they reach you.

So what to do? Still prepare and build yourself a nice cache. But keep a low profile and pretend to those outside your circle that you are just as hungry and desperate as they are. Don't be running generators or lights and don't be bragging on how you were smarter than everybody else by being prepared.

And I might add to the above that you should learn a good trade, one that will be useful in a world without electricity or other infrastructure. Such as carpentry, medicine, hunting/fishing, etc.

Having a valuable skill like this will make you valuable and indispensable.

I don’t see a scenario for societal breakdown. Peak oil. It's a possibility.
