Britain's Rockhopper Finds Oil Off The Falklands

Rockhopper, the British oil and gas explorer, said it had discovered oil off the Falkland Islands.

Published: 2:25PM BST 06 May 2010

British explorer Rockhopper said it has discovered oil in the North Falkland Basin. "Current indications are that we have made the first oil discovery in the North Falkland Basin," said Samuel Moody, managing director, said in a statement.

Rockhopper Exploration shares jumped 120pc to 81p.

The company, which is working in the North Falkland Basin, made the find at a depth of 2,744m in its Sea Lion prospect. It is considering whether to drill an appraisal well.

"We are extremely excited by the results of this [exploration] well," said Mr Moody said. "We will now focus on analysing in more detail the data gathered from the well."

The Falklands lie 280 miles off the South American Atlantic coast. The UK and Argentina dispute ownership. Britain reclaimed the islands following an Argentine invasion in 1982, but Buenos Aires has never abandoned its claim.

Tensions between the countries were heightened this earlier this year when Desire Petroleum, another British oil exploration company, started drilling in the North Falkland Basin. Its initial exploration well was later abandoned.

I think this is way past the continental shelf. Another piece of data that proves the abiotic theory of the formation of petroleum.

Looks like the Argies will come calling. But only after they’ve beefed up their creaky Air Force, which still flies the Vietnam-era Skyhawks (that McCain once flew) that saw action during the Falklands War.

Think again. The Falklands isn't new and volcanic, but rather an ancient remnant of the Gondwana supercontinent. The oil that is potentially there is in (biotic) sedimentary layers.

The petroleum survey area of the Falklands Islands is in the sea to the north of the islands, covers 150,000 sq mi (400,000 km2), and contains several sedimentary basins from the Meozoic period.

I think the UK and the Argies knew way back and it the real reason they invaded.

I had heard that it could be 70 billion barrels around the islands but that is a rough rough ocean and probably deep water too.

That explains ()bama’s remark to the Argentinians about taking the Falkland Islands.

He must have been told about the discovery of oil by . . . Soros?

Hopefully they are smarter this time and have resources on the islands now that they don’t have much of a navy and our administration will be against them, rather than helping them.

Yep, and this time things can get slippery fast. Learn from the Gulf Of Mexico oil disaster.

It’s about 2700+ feet to the bottom in that area.

Like shooting fish in a barrel if the ocean is not too bad. Any idea the depth they drill in the N Sea and that big one off Labrador in Iceberg Alley?

On the south side of the North Sea it is about 150. North side is about 600 feet and off of the SW coast of Norway it gets down to about 1200 feet.

Out in the Labrador Sea along the continental shelf is about 600 fee to 2300 feet but drops off to a couple of miles down.

Dinosaurs and plant life at 2700+ feet below sea level? How’d it get down there?

Thanks. Scary stuff but not that deep but a treacherous ocean. The people in the oil industry have a lot of guts. The ocean creeps me out a bit.

Argentina is even more broke than the UK and France. The Argies need all their money for Senorita Kerschner’s wardrobe, botox and plastic surgery aka the Evita wannabe. Pelosi missed her calling.

The b*stards already raided private pensions which is Obama’s next trick on retiree’s money.
