Actually, "Jamaal" is Arabic, but not necessarily Muslim. There are people from Arabic speaking countries (or whose ancestors are from there) who aren't Muslims, you know.
I guess I'd have to know more about him. He is of an age to have had American "black power" parents from the 60s who were rejecting Christ, changing their names and naming their kids all sorts of nonsense. We had some Johnsons in our scout troop who went to court to legally change to a made-up muslim surname with several u's, w's and k's in it, saddling their kids with it. Sort of like the hippies of the era who named their kids "Moonbeam" and "River" and all that counterculture stuff.
