Nashville Flooding Causes Unemployment Phone Line Problems

(Memphis 5/5/2010) Eugene Holloway has been unemployed since December.

He says he is required to call the department of labor weekly to verify his unemployment. You must call in order receive your unemployment check.

It's typically a 5 minute process but not this week.

"I kept getting busy signals, I called about 15-20 times," said Holloway.

And he's not the only one.

"You call in you get locked out. You call in and you can't get through. You got to come up here and you can see all these people," said Wayne Phillips.

The office that takes the certification calls is in an area of Nashville that was flooded.

The office was evacuated and the power is off.

This means the system set up to take those mandatory weekly calls was down.

Department of Labor representatives say the good news is they were able to get the system up and working again Wednesday.

They are working now to fix the website and reroute phone calls for those calling to file claims.

"They should try to call. If their call does not go through, we strongly encourage them to report in person to any of the career centers in Memphis," said Gail Taylor from the Department of Labor.

Some employees say the Memphis career center has seen triple the amount of traffic this week.

Taylor says the check printing system was unaffected by the flooding. However she does say if you were late filing your claim, you will likely see a day or two delays in getting your check.

The black liberation theologist and kenyan usurping muslim celebrates... he hates the South... and he hates all of you in Tennessee. He hates us here on the Mississippi Coast too.

The feeling about Obamalamadingdong is quite mutual amongst most Tennesseans.....except maybe in and around Memphis....

I’m in the Memphis area, and no one likes Dear Leader around here.

Well, the rails are washed out north of town
We gotta head for higher ground
We can’t come back till the water comes down,
Five feet high and risin’

It’s so depressing to me to see my countrymen so dependent on the government for their very sustenance. Rather than just draw unemployment and munch Cheetos and watch TV, why not search for something new to do for a living?

Huh? With all the Fords that have been elected to public office down yonder? Come on now, surely there's somebody in Memphis that still likes Obamalamadingdong?

BTW, the wife and I passed through Memphis a month or so ago on our way back from Colorado. We stopped and ate at Interstate BBQ. The aroma in the parking lot will make you gain 5 lbs. Ribs and pulled pork. Outstanding!
