I’ve been wondering what ever happened to the so-called diapers that were touted as something to easily deploy and clean up an oil spill? Also, these men prove what I’ve thought for a long time, this country has become too dependent on PhD’s and not enough on good ole common sense and ingenuity; which is what built this country in the first place.
Wind and water action will loosen up the mat and spread it somewhat.
I throw out squares of alfalfa hay to clear up the silt in my catfish pond.
‘........2 years for the EPA to do environmental hay impact ocean water studies ./s’
BINGO, WE HAVE A WINNER!
Not to mention the benefits to the farmers who grow the hay.
Now this could be a genuine boost to the local economy. Those who grow the hay, those who haul it to wherever and those who spread it on the waters.
As the oldsters say, “It’s an all wind that does NOBODY good.”
As a parent of kids trying to make a go of farming I rejoice in ANY good news for those who grow.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.
This is EXACTLY what should be done. All the needed materials are RIGHT THERE, occur naturally, and can be easily transported.
The barges and blowers are easy to get. The fishing industry will HAPPILY help out of the gov, gives them some fair pay for doing so, its in their best interests to help any way they can.
This is BRILLIANT.
Scoop up all the hay on the beaches, use nets on the fishing boats to catch hay... bingo. Might need a lot of new nets after that tho...
Still this is BRILLIANT.
Environmental Engineering Credo: “The Solution to Pollution is Dillution”.
That's a great idea. Instead of sitting there idle, they can be earning income and helping get the oil cleaned up even quicker so they can get back to their jobs. And it would probably be cheaper for BP to hire them than to try to do it all themselves.
Sadly, the common sense practicality of this whole thing diminishes the likelihood of it getting done.
“ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.”
I thought so too.
Sheriffs have already begun staging HUGE rolls of hay throughout the counties 26 miles of beaches today.
Good for them.
I hope they don’t take any nonsense over this from anyone trying to keep them from doing something about it.
Cause I could see the feds and the EPA and DEC going after them.
Is there a FL ping list that you know of?
I would reckon cigarette butts would soak up the oil as well. They float, and are easily scoopable.
Here’s an article that explains it doesn’t do much good to wash the shore, rocks and birds - http://news.discovery.com/earth/oil-spill-clean-up-valdez.html
Alfalfa tea makes a pretty good tanning solution for hides as well. Couple good quality flakes in a barrel and the tannin does the rest.
There’s an outfit around here that sells pulverized cotton seed hulls as oil absorbent; oil spills ( on ground) become little spheres easily scooped. Quite burnable in a woodstove, etc.
I can imagine the cajuns have got a barge with a round bale shredder ready to blow across the water as we speak...
Never let a good disaster (like a coal train derailment, or oil spill) go to waste.
Now, now, Obama and Co. can't let this good crisis go to waste.
They can cut all the bahia grass they want off of my place. I can’t get rid of the stuff...
“This is completely unacceptable. The solution must be minimally effective, profoundly expensive and require months and months to work.”
... and involve lawyers. Obama’s first act when he heard of an oil spill was to send lawyers.
Straw was used in the 300,000 gallon oil spill in San Francisco Bay in 1971.
Thank you, metmom. Added to Monster ping. FRegards ....
