CAMP SHAHEEN, Afghanistan - Finland's presence in Afghanistan might not make international headlines, but a local unit played host to 10 media members from their home country here to tell their story.

Finnish soldiers assigned to the Operational Mentor and Liaison Team at Afghan National Army Camp Shaheen, showcased their efforts during a one-day visit from various homeland media outlets conducting a seven-day media embed with the Finnish Army.

Media members were eager to see their soldiers, or peacekeepers as they are known in Finland, and highlight their accomplishments.

"I think they are doing a good job here and that's what I'm trying to show to my people as well," said Erja Tuomaala, National TV and Radio reporter. "They are here to help these Afghan people. I'm very proud and surprised how well organized these guys are; I'm really proud of them," she added.

Peacekeepers here briefed media on their role as part of a coalition effort to mentor engineering skills, as well as, other support and staff level functions.

"It's been kind of amazing, all new, all interesting, seeing all this happening here – it's amazing," said Kimmo Makila, Finnish News Agency STT Lehtikuva reporter. "We've been pre-briefed about all of this training and now we finally see it happening. I think back in Finland many people are interested about what's going on in [Afghanistan]."

Lt. Col. Kari Pohjala, Chief of Staff mentor to Afghan National Army 209th Corps, was excited at the opportunity to work with home country reporters stating that "it's a good chance for our guys, it's good information for their relatives and friends."

"The OMLT concept is very important, we build up the capacity and capabilities of ANA so that they, one day, can take care of the security themselves without any mentors or without any other help," the colonel added.

Media reporters left with stories about the efforts of Finnish OMLT mentors at Camp Shaheen and the impact they have on a country in rebuilding.

"I'm very pleased with the spirit of the Finnish soldiers, it's excellent," said Timo Yliharsila, Aamulehti reporter. "They take this very seriously and they seem to care about the Afghan people … to help them to live as human beings."
