The National Republican Senatorial Committee succeeded in winning attention for its candidate Rob Portman today by busting through the clutter of Internet ads that rarely deserve notice.
It did so by blaming Portman's Democratic opponent, Ohio Lt. Governor Lee Fisher, for the state's job losses and high unemployment rate.
Like Portman, the ad mocks Fisher, who headed the state's development department before entering the U.S. Senate race, as Ohio's "job czar."
But that message is totally secondary to the visuals.
The ad manipulates an image of a sleepy and shirtless Fisher seated in his home office with one arm on his chest and one below his waist giving the impression that the former attorney general is giving himself a ... well ... you decide.
Okay. I know what you are thinking: The Plain Dealer is watching way too many videos on-line.
But the image is complemented by some sexy-sounding music and captions that read "He didn't get the job done" and "He was more concerned about his job than yours."
NRSC spokeswoman Amber Marchand said the ad is not sexually suggestive but rather highlights Fisher's poor track record as an elected official. She said the ad simply uses a "screen capture" of Fisher.
The screen capture comes from a scene from a documentary, "Swing State," made by Fisher's son, Jason. The film chronicles Fisher and gubernatorial candidate Ted Strickland during their successful 2006 campaign. The full scene shows Fisher at night complaining to his son about the campaign's lack of "clear and concise" message. Last year, the scene was edited and posted by a Fisher critic on YouTube, quickly going viral within political circles.
The Democratic National Senatorial Committee also released an Internet ad today -- but it is totally boring.
It pushes the tired message that Portman is a Wall Street cheerleader and there's no nudity -- just a shot of Portman and his one-time boss, George W. Bush.
The Plain Dealer is watching way too many videos on-line.
Worth repeating.

Whaaaa! Wha! Wha! Wha! Wha!
Whaaaaaaaaa!
LMAO
OH MY that is too funny. Wrong, but funny
I do not think Fisher has a snowballs chance in h*ll but I’d love to see this air on TV where all would see it!
.
If the ‘Rats had put out this ad it would be lauded by their useful idiots in the media.
Lee Fisher - One big wanker.
First I skimmed the article to determine the gender of said Lee. Moving on.
Would a distinguished freeper please fill us in on this. Am curious about the history of the dude, what is the background on this....
We need experts in the field to judge this, send it off to the SEC.
It really does look bad, lol.
