George Alan Rekers, a prominent anti-gay activist and cofounder of the conservative Family Research Council, recently returned from a 10-day trip to Europe with a male escort who advertises on a Web site called Rentboy.com, according to a May Miami New Times article that was lighting up the liberal blogosphere and gay media outlets Wednesday.
Rekers told the New Times he hired the escort to help carry luggage, not for sexual purposes, and that he only learned his companion was a prostitute midway through the trip. On Wednesday, he published a statement on his Web site decrying the New Times story as "slanderous."
"A recent article in an alternative newspaper cleverly gave false impressions of inappropriate behavior because of its misleading innuendo, incorrectly implying that Professor George Rekers used the Rentboy website to hire a prostitute to accompany him on a recent trip," the statement said. "Contrary to Internet stories based on this slanderous article, following medical advice Professor George Rekers requires an assistant to lift his luggage in his travels because of an ongoing condition following surgery. ... Professor Rekers was not involved in any illegal or sexual behavior with his travel assistant."
A professor of psychology at the University of South Carolina and a Baptist minister, Rekers is a leading proponent of therapy to "cure" homosexuality and has testified against gay adoption. He is a board member of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, which calls itself "a professional, scientific organization that offers hope to those who struggle with unwanted homosexuality."
The escort, who was identified in the article by the pseudonym 'Lucien,' told the newspaper that his services were enlisted through Rentboy.com, which helps clients "find gay escorts, male escorts, gay masseurs, male masseurs and learn how to become an escort."

Hired a male sexual “escort” to travel with him so he could witness to him?
So, you feel you’re lowing the charges from homosexuality and hypocrisy to Felony Stupid? And you feel that’s a gain?
Yikes.
“A recent article in an alternative newspaper...”
Which paper? Some Village Voice or New Times “alternative weekly” hippie sex paper with 30% of the ad revenue from escort and massage prostitute ads?
Sorry, but nobody is that naively stupid.
Are you suspicious of the time that Jesus Christ spent talking to prostitutes?
“Typical liberal media lies. From what I’ve heard, Rekers hired the guy specifically so he could counsel him *against* the lifestyle choice.”
That may be the dumbest thing said today...
Does the Family Research Council not have any staff?
I’m with ya. He’s a professor. No starving (but straight) college intern available for an expense paid trip to Europe? All for the small price of carrying some luggage?
WaPo scrambling to divert attention from this story:

Seems to be a lot of that going around lately.
I know nothing of the person or this scenario.
I do know that alternative weekly music/sex papers routinely smear anything to the right of NPR.
If he had paid them the going hourly rate in order to talk to them, it would not have been perceived as a sign that his ministry was true.
Then why bring up Jesus talking to prostitutes?
....say, there’s this bridge in Brooklyn. I can get it for you for a real good price....
;)
Right. Doesn’t he have a nephew or a cousin or someone to accompany him on trips?
Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes...... oh heck no...
So, you feel youre lowing the charges from homosexuality and hypocrisy to Felony Stupid? And you feel thats a gain?
Wow nice shot!
