No.....Opera is also semi-modal: you can’t mouse-over to bring up the Windows taskbar when it’s on Auto-Hide.

...using the web browser to browse local files. Hmmm. I use Opera and can use it to browse local files. However, I have not really explored using it too much in this manner as the File Manager app in KDE already works well enough as far as I can see.

True, however you can maximize the window if you need to do that. Or do what I do by default: have another window open -File manager is simplest- and then alt-tab over to it. Then mouse over to the Desktop (NOT “Windows”(tm) ) taskbar to bring it up.

Have you ever tried the "alt-f4" command? I haven't; what does it do, reformat my hard drive?
LOL Good guess. It won't format your drive, but it will shut down your browser pretty quick.

I've never been a super geek, but IIRC, in 1994, MS saw this as a real threat. Windows 95 hadn't come out yet, so if you remember Windows 3.1, it didn't really do a heck of a lot except browse local files, and supposedly printer drivers were universal (supposedly.) I don't know if you remember having to install new printer drivers for every software package, but it was a PITA. Anyway, back then, a browser already had most of the functions of Windows 3.1, which still just made calls to DOS for practically all of it's functions.
Today, an OS does a lot more than a web browser. Then, not so much.

Only with my setup, I want to be able to use full screen and not have to hassle with the keyboard:
I only want the keyboard in my lap when I need to type something.....not when browsing.

OK, how about mouse-rightclick on page, click on “Fullscreen” to ‘un-fullscreen’ it. Mouse over to the hidden desktop taskbar to bring it up then click on the Menu icon as usual. When finished rightclick on webpage in Opera and go back to Fullscreen. Not as simple as simply mousing over to the hidden taskbar, however considering the speed and minimal memory requirements of Opera (among other great features) I still prefer it over other browsers.
