NYPD: Car bomb contained nonexplosive fertilizer

NEW YORK — New York City police investigating a botched car bombing in Times Square say the bomb contained fertilizer that was incapable of exploding.

Top police spokesman Paul Browne says more than 100 pounds of a substance found in the back of an SUV parked on a busy city street near a theater showing "The Lion King" was fertilizer.

But unlike the ammonium nitrate grade fertilizer that has been used in terror attacks including the Oklahoma City bombing, Browne says this fertilizer would not have caused a massive explosion.

Exactly. He’s probably busy writing a GOP resume right now, too. Just in case he gets caught.

Is there a training camp for "special" terrorists?

I know I’m wearing my tin foil hat, because I want to know what caused the explosion of the oil well. No one seems to care why or how it happened.

I keep telling myself that it’s luck when a terrorist can’t even detonate his own underwear and just earns a non-posthumous Darwin Award by roasting his own chestnuts, when a group of pirates attacks a US warship, when Obama overplays his political hand, and when another terrorist can’t mix a couple of common ingredients in an SUV. I just hope we don’t get overconfident as we laugh at the stupidity of evil.

A Connecticut license plate on the vehicle did not match the SUV, according to authorities, who did not know a motive. Police interviewed the Connecticut car owner, who told police he had sent the plates to a nearby junkyard, Bloomberg said.

To me, it sounds like a liberal charade to take the heat off Barack and put it on the tea partiers.

My sentiment exactly ... this is a contrived incident to diminish conservatives, tea party types or anyone else that's of the same persuasion. This is a set up ...

Great... now we are going to have to show ID and prove we have a lawn before purchasing fertilizer at Home Depot..........................................................................

Home improvement centers haven’t sold “boom type” fertilizer for a number of years . Urea is what is being sold in place of Amonium Nitrate.

Well if someone did this to make US look bad they were taking an awful chance. Anything that would link back to the government in this would crash Obama and co. forever. I doubt they would set this up if that’s what you are implying.

Though not efficient, if the fertilizer was ammonium nitrate, it would have accelerated any combustion of any inflammable materials. Inside an enclosed vehicle that would have been explosive.

Do not trust the “science” of newpaper reporters or the police who are all as dumb as a sack or rocks.

Who sends plates to a junkyard? Isn’t it SOP to remove the plates before selling or scrapping a car?

It's not about making the U.S. look bad, it's about making conservatives look bad. Linking this back to the government is unlikely, this act of terrorism is probably the act of some demented liberal operative ... working largely on his/her own.

There’s an oversupply of it closer by, at the NYT building. Probably enough in Frank Rich’s office alone to supply the agricultural needs of a dozen third-world countries.
