Obama tells Palestinians that Israel is to blame
Israel Today ^ | May 2, 2010 | Staff

US [Alleged] President Barack Obama made clear in a recent letter to the Palestinians that he views Israel as the obstacle to peace and will approach further peace efforts from that point of view, according to senior Palestinian Authority officials.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat confirmed for the Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency that such a letter was sent, and that in it Obama "clarified the US stance on the peace process and Israel's intransigence on the issue of settlements."

Erekat said that the letter contained several assurances to the Palestinians, but refused to go into detail.

A day earlier, London newspaper The Guardian reported on what one of those assurances may be - a proposal to start backing official UN condemnation of any and all Israeli "settlement activity."

Washington has traditionally used its veto power to block any UN resolutions that would put Israel in a difficult position vis-à-vis allowing Jews to build on their ancestral and biblical lands. If the US were to stop vetoing such resolutions, which would likely result in an increase in condemnation, Israel could be forced to implement an unofficial Jewish building freeze across the board and for an unlimited amount of time.

That report would seem to fit with the more vague account of assurances another Palestinian official said the letter contained.

PA secretary general Tayeb Abdel Rahim on Sunday told reporters that the letter made the usual commitments to an independent Palestinian state with territorial continuity. Rahim also said that Obama promised to start publicly assigning blame to those he sees holding up peace and to force Israel into indefinitely extending its temporary settlement freeze.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu implemented the 10-month freeze at the behest of Washington in order to test the Palestinians' readiness to return to the negotiating table. When it was first announced last November, US officials praised Netanyahu for taking "unprecedented" steps for peace. Now that it is clear the Palestinians are not going to respond in kind, the Obama administration appears to be blaming Netanyahu for not having done enough.

Remarks At the American Jewish Committee Annual Gala Dinner
Hillary Clinton
April 29, 2010

Israel's Right to Defend Itself Is Not Negotiable Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told the American Jewish Committee Thursday: "President Obama noted recently that there has been some of what he called 'noise and distortion' about this administration's approach in the Middle East. Over the past month, we have attempted to remove any ambiguity. The president and this administration have repeatedly reaffirmed our commitment to Israel's security in word and in deed."

"We have spoken out forcefully about the grave dangers of Syria's transfer of weapons to Hizbullah. We condemn this in the strongest possible terms and have expressed our concerns directly to the Syrian government. Transferring weapons to these terrorists - especially longer-range missiles - would pose a serious threat to the security of Israel....We do not accept such provocative and destabilizing behavior - nor should the international community."

"Regional peace must begin with the recognition by every party that the United States will always stand behind Israel's security and, as President Obama put it recently, 'no wedge will be driven between us. Now, we will have our differences, but when we do, we will work to resolve them as close allies.' Israel's right to exist, and to defend itself, is not negotiable. And no lasting peace will be possible unless that fact is accepted. But similarly, Palestinians must have a state of their own. They must be able to travel, conduct business, govern themselves, and enjoy the dignity of a sovereign people. There can be no equivocating on this either....We know we cannot and will not impose a solution. It is up to the parties themselves." (State Department)

Like I inferred here, the pressure Obama is under to make his presidency noteworthy makes him the perfect candidate to throw out the status quo of the last two administrations contending with the Israel/Palestinian "problem" and not "kick this down the road."

I think he wants to be the one to "solve" this in the American experience so he will be operating outside the norms of what has been our relationship with Israel. This is written all over the way he has handled the Middle East thus far.

I see him demanding the extremes of Israel in exchange for tacitly endorsing any operations they initiate against Hezbollah and Iran in the near future.

Watch for it to trend this way the next few months. Watch for major events in the Middle East in the next few months.

Yep...that’s about right. And you are especially right that BO is shifting power from here to Europe....the white house will be a revolving door now of diplomates/bankers,international etc. eager to get our monetary system set and understood now that he has a closed door policy of who comes and goes.

You can take a lot of arrows around here for daring to say McCain was any better than hussein. Ridiculous, but some people are that far off the deep end. McCain was a lousy choice, but still infinitely better than hussein.

I’m just wondering how far we should go with our support for the actions of the government of Israel.

Should it be the position of the government of the USA that it will always support the actions of the government of Israel? Should we support even those actions of Israel’s government that are against Israel’s own best interests? Should we support even those actions of Israel’s government that are against Israel’s own best interests, and which are also opposed by a majority of its own citizens? Finally, should the US government support the actions of the government of Israel which are contrary to the interests of the USA?

I’m not saying that any of the above apply in this situation. I’m just wondering where the lines should be drawn in our support for the actions of the government of Israel, or if our support should be unqualified in every regard.

American Jews, for the most part, couldn’t care less about Israel.
