Immigrant advocates are being arrested in front of the White House fence, after sitting down and defying orders from police.
About three dozen protesters and U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois joined in the civil disobedience Saturday. They held a sign saying, "Obama, Stop deporting our Families." Some wore T-shirts that read "Arrest us, Not our Families."
Protesters are usually required to stay in motion when demonstrating in front of the White House.
Hundreds of protesters turned out for the rally at Lafayette Park, urging President Obama to fulfill his campaign promises to achieve immigration reform.
Obama was to return to the White House around 2:40 p.m. after speaking at the University of Michigan. Two Marine helicopters flew overhead, but it wasn't clear if Obama was on board.
Obama had once promised to tackle immigration reform in his first 100 days, but has pushed back that timetable several times. He said this week that Congress may lack the "appetite" to take on immigration after going through a tough legislative year. However, the president and Congress could address related issues, like boosting personnel and resources for border security, in spending bills this year.
Activists said outrage over Arizona's controversial immigration law "awakened a sleeping giant" Saturday as rallies demanding federal immigration reform kicked off in cities across the country.
In New York, Labor organizer John Delgado said anger over the law -- which requires local law enforcement to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they're in the country illegally -- drew more than 5,000 people to a rally at Manhattan's Foley Square.
"That's the fuel that motivated them to come here, because of the sadness of the Arizona law," said Delgado, who is business manager for Local 79 of the Construction and General Building Laborers Union.
Perhaps you are right. According to his website he has a background as a “community activist”;)
Larry Craig comes to mind.
Otherwise known as a community organizer.
Why is this La Raza activist in Congress anyway? The only time I see Luis Gutierrez’s name mentioned in the news is when it deals with illegal immgrants and something that is in someway related to Hispanics.
Yep. He should change his middle name to Hussein
Adios, Amigo.
I am SO sick and tired of this CRAP! My grandparents could not come to this country without a sponser.
All of these illegals have a sponsor.. his name is Obama. lol
Wait...isn’t obama and undocumented worker also?
Tutu is missing from them both.
Did O call in the SWAT team?
The grannies want to know.......
Under Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony. The General Law on Population says,
* A penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of three hundred to five thousand pesos will be imposed on the foreigner who enters the country illegally. (Article 123)
* Foreigners with legal immigration problems may be deported from Mexico instead of being imprisoned. (Article 125)
Mexicans who help illegal aliens enter the country are themselves considered criminals under the law:
* A Mexican who marries a foreigner with the sole objective of helping the foreigner live in the country is subject to up to five years in prison. (Article 127)
* Shipping and airline companies that bring undocumented foreigners into Mexico will be fined. (Article 132)
All of the above runs contrary to what Mexican leaders are demanding of the United States. The contrast between Mexicos immigration practices versus its American immigration preachings is stark.
Lets call Mexicos bluff on its unwarranted interference in U.S. immigration policy. Lets propose, just to make a point, that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) member nations standardize their immigration laws by using Mexicos own law as a model.
whatever happened to aunt tutu?
Whorealdo will hail him as a hero!
Foreigners are also not allowed to protest
Don’t taze me, hermano?
;-)
If you were to buy a Tazer and Taze him you would also be supporting an Arizona company!
What a dick.
