My ancestors were oppressed by the British until they left Ireland about 100 years ago. When they arrived here they were oppressed by the Episcopalians who then ran Boston. My father's older brother used to speak often about the “no Irish need apply” signs you'd see at the front door of many employers. This trust funded “progressive” can feel as ashamed of his “whiteness”...and his ancestors...as he wants but *I* will feel neither pride *nor* shame over *my* “whiteness” and I'll never apologize for *my* ancestors because there's no reason to do so.

oppressed by the Episcopalians

Have you noticed how Irish Americans are now the embodiment of the intolerant, bigoted white in popular culture, a part formerly played by the WASP? Maybe I’m imagining it. It seems to pop up in story lines every now and then: the evil oppressor is a third-generation Irish Catholic.
