Hezbollah slams UN 'interference' in Lebanon (warns that its arsenal was off-limits)

BEIRUT (AFP) – Hezbollah on Friday slammed "interference" in Lebanese affairs by UN envoy Terje Roed-Larsen and warned that its arsenal was off-limits after the diplomat accused militias of creating tension in Lebanon.

"Hezbollah condemns this attempt to create dissent and sedition among the Lebanese under the guise of advice and guidance," the Shiite militant party said in a statement.

"Roed-Larsen's continuous attempts to interfere in Lebanese affairs and incite the Lebanese to fight one another are unacceptable for an international official working for peace in the region," it said.

On Thursday the UN envoy had warned of the need to address the presence in Lebanon of heavily armed militias, which he said was a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1559, adopted in 2004.

The resolution calls for "the disbanding and disarmament" of all militias in the country.

"As long as these unresolved issues are there, for instance the existence of heavily armed militias in Lebanon... there will always be tension," Roed-Larsen said after briefing the Security Council on a report on the implementation of Resolution 1559.

Resolutions are for sissies. Something right up the UN's alley.

Hezbollah leader won't say if militants have Scuds

BASSEM MROUE, Associated Press Writer Bassem Mroue, Associated Press Writer – Fri Apr 30, 8:52 am ET

BEIRUT – Hezbollah can strike infrastructure deep inside Israel if a new war breaks out, the group's leader said in remarks published Friday, but refused to confirm whether or not the militants have long-range Scud missiles.

The missiles have been at the center of new Mideast tensions since Israel earlier this month accused Syria of providing Hezbollah with the Scuds, which have a greater range and can carry a much bigger warhead than the rockets Hezbollah fired at Israel in the past.

Syria has denied the allegations, as has Lebanon's Western-backed prime minister.

Hezbollah's leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah indicated that the details of the group's weaponry are a secret.

Wasn't this the terrorist group that was launching rockets from right next to a UN base in Lebanon that Israel hit back, killing (I believe) a Canadian or Australian officer? IIRC, the media was all over Israel until the story disappeared when it turned out that the very same officer had been reporting the attacks, and asking for the authority to force the terrorists to find another place to launch their attacks... He was turned down by the UN.
