Perry criticizes Ariz. law, won't adopt for Texas By Eric Zimmermann - 04/30/10 12:45 PM ET
Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is not a fan of the new Arizona immigration law and said he would not consider adopting it for Texas.
In a statement released by his office, Perry said the Arizona provision would distract law enforcement officers from their basic priorities.
"[S]ome aspects of the law turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials by requiring them to determine immigration status during any lawful contact with a suspected alien, taking them away from their existing law enforcement duties, which are critical to keeping citizens safe," Perry said.
"Our focus must continue to be on the criminal elements involved with conducting criminal acts against Texans and their property. I will continue to work with the legislative leadership to develop strategies that are appropriate for Texas.:
While Perry said he "fully recognize[s] and support a states right and obligation to protect its citizens" the Arizona law "would not be the right direction for Texas."
Did they say the same thing about Rudy Giuliani when they went after the squeegee guys and graffiti makers?
Perry is wrong.
If the police have a suspect, and have nothing else to hold him on, other than citizenship status, would it not be wise to have that tool -— if the guy is suspected of rape or murder?
Worthless RINO POS.
All through the Bush years, you heard the Texas governor had a weak job, by the mainstreams. What is keeping an conservative minded state rep from entering such a bill?
This is a very unwise move on Perry’s part at this time. He only won the Republican primary recently, not the actual gubernatorial election. He still has to face Ed White, who is an extremely smart and capable Dem opponent. Perry has set himself up to be out-positioned by White on this.
I like some of his border security plans (using drones) but I hope, like the Gardasil fiasco, he will reconsider his decision.
Many politicians are doing a dance on this issue, trying not to offend anyone on either side.
We 70% need to make clear that we insist on border control and that we will make it a priority. The border was not an issue in 2008 because the Republican candidate McCain, as well as his chief opponents Huckster and Romney, were all even more liberal on illegals than Obama. We simply conceded the issue.
Let us draw the line now. No more McCains, no more Huckabees, no more Romneys, no more Michael Steeles. No more liberal Republicans running the party.
In more years...can’t vote him out this time as White, the Dem would be worse, and Kay (RINO) is back in Washinton and would have been worse than Perry anyway.... but this move by him is just panderring to the Mex.Americans in Texas who can legally vote - and the thousands of Mexican -Mexicans who vote here illegally.
Meanwhile, back at Reality Ranch... sigh...
Just when it appeared this was going to catch fire throughout some parts of the country.
Election for governor is this year, however there is one main point to consider before tossing him aside. His opponent is Bill White, the former mayor of Houston whose main claim to fame was converting New Orleans deadbeats to Houston deadbeats. The city is still suffering from that move.
Perry is assuming that Texas Republicans will vote for him this November anyway. Bill White made Houston a sanctuary city when he was mayor. Texas voters are stuck with voting for the lesser of two evils.
Based strictly on what’s reported in the article/excerpt, I don’t see any fallacies in Perry’s comments. Apparently, it’s a matter of cost.
It seems he’d prefer to react to crimes perpetrated by illegal aliens instead of taking proactive measures to identify the illegal aliens in advance.
I guess Perry believes it’s less costly to suffer rape, kidnapping, murder, theft, and the subsequent investigations then to burden LEOs with the occasional responsibility of asking a few questions during routine enforcement duties that might identify illegal aliens (and potentially involve the Feds).
Arizona’s priorities are obviously different than Perry’s.
Perry is making a huge mistake on this, he is actually jeopardizing his chance to be the 2012 republican candidate and eventually president.
Surely you jest...I listened to Bill White being interviewed on WOAI yesterday and he couldn't string two coherant thoughts together on any subject.
I know...don't call you Shirley... ; )
Why not? Are illegal invaders more important than America citizens?
Why?
This vote for evil thing will eventually leave America dead on the floor.
Well, as much as it pains me to say it because I wanted Perry out of there so badly (and KBH was out of the question as well) the alternative in the general election, Bill White, is totally unacceptable. Therefore, Texas Republicans should come out in force for Perry. Now I must go take a shower...I feel so dirty ; )
Good, we don't need another pandering con man in the WH.
