People would be surprised how often this happens on land rigs, they just don’t hear about it.

You are right, it does happen more often on land rigs. When I was a summer intern in west Texas I worked on drilling rigs pulling core samples. I was standing on the rig floor when the well blew out. I had a camera and got some pictures of the beginning of the blowout and after we all ran away, pictures of the fluids shooting up above the crown block. Then the BOP shut and everything was ok, no fire. Everyone’s biggest concern was moving their trucks before they got covered with drilling mud and crude. That's the advantage of a land rig, you can run away.
