Congress will likely stop extending the limit for receiving unemployment benefits because of concern about the exploding deficit.
That means the number of unemployed Americans who will stop getting the aid, after 99 straight weeks of checks, will break one million in coming months, according to Bloomberg.
Congress already has lengthened the period for which the unemployed may receive aid 46 weeks originally three times since the recession began in 2007.
Democrats who have provided the support for past extensions say deficit worries make it impossible to go any further. The deficit totaled $1.42 trillion last year and is likely to hit $1.5 trillion this year.
Unemployment aid has become one of the federal budgets fastest-growing components, with costs this year likely to reach $200 billion. Thats six times what was typically spent before the recession.
You cant go on forever, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus said, according to Bloomberg. I think 99 weeks is sufficient.
Theres just been no discussion to go beyond that, said Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N

P!
>> costs this year likely to reach $200 billion
Whoa!
Man, all this free stuff sure is expensive.
Get ready for coming CommieCrate/RINO planned serfdom!
WOW I figure the dems would extend them through the elections and then let them stop ASAP? Two years is a long time to collect.
0bama will pull more out of “his stash.”
Consider this: the two month extension of benefits congress just passed costs about what it costs to run NASA for one year: $18 billion.
For what the Feds are paying people to sit home for 8 weeks, they could double the size of NASA.
Yeppers - your cheated and red my mind! How did you do that?
At least if you get the sniffles while watching the Price is Right you know your superfluous doctor's visit will be covered someday.
Which deserves tax dollars most
The working man who has been unemployed.
The welfare queen who has been on the taxpayers tit for years and years and years
...AllaBama’s stash is his hand in my pocket, and yours, all of us...
Paying people not to work is stupid.
Amen. 0bama’s trying to ruin the middle class and the cr*p he’s pulled so far is succeeding. Arggh!
The Great Depression keeps getting deeper....
Is this one of those receiving 2 years of unemployment?
The unemployment figures should improve as they are dropped. That doesn't mean people have found jobs, though. But the figures look better and what else could politicians want in an election year?
Actually I believe that the UE figures are for people on their first 26 weeks. Actual unemployment U6 is 18% with under/unemployment at 20% to 23% if early/forced retirements and drop outs of the job market are concerned.
People start to lose their homes they move in with relatives, they do odd jobs for cash. It is bad out there.
