As I recall, the Tomcat pilot who went nose down toward the water got the higher brass a little nervous , but the pilot didn’t seem to mind.

It is also my son’s favorite sequence, but then again he flies a Strike Eagle so I can understand. He tends to fly around deep in valleys (I guess that’s why they are called “Mud Hens”).

Yeah, that's Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient Charles Durning (who landed on Omaha Beach), and The Final Countdown is something of a popular favorite for old Navy types. It premiered in the summer of 1980 but did not do that well of the box office because it was completely overshadowed by Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. It still shows up on cable and satellite TV occasionally, and there's a very good remastered DVD available.
