SANTIAGO JUXTLACUACA, Mexico Two Mexican activists missing after an attack on an aid convoy, in which one Mexican and one Finn were killed, returned on Thursday and said two missing journalists were alive.
The activists said one of the journalists had been shot in the foot so they could not leave a mountainous area where they had fled after Tuesday's attack in San Juan Copala, southern Mexico, where tensions are high between indigenous Trique groups and authorities.
Police were unable to enter the volatile area on foot on Thursday due to gunfire, the father of the injured journalist, David Cilia, told AFP.
A police helicopter, carrying the editor of Contralinea magazine -- for which both journalists work -- and Cilia's father, headed to the area late Thursday, an AFP journalist saw.
The southern Oaxaca state has a history of political violence.
State Governor Ulises Ruiz said on Wednesday that he did not understand why foreigners had been traveling "unilaterally" to a conflict area.
