NEW YORK Former first lady Laura Bush writes in her forthcoming autobiography that she and her husband George W. Bush may have been poisoned when they became ill at a summit in Germany in 2007, the New York Times reported Wednesday.
Writing in her book "Spoken from the Heart," due to be released in May, Laura Bush says that the US Secret Service probed whether the presidential delegation may have been poisoned at the G8 summit.
George W. Bush spent part of the summit bedridden.
Doctors concluded that they had contracted a virus, she said, according to the Times report.
However "we never learned if any other delegations became ill, or if ours, mysteriously, was the only one," Laura Bush wrote.
She also wrote about a fatal November 1963 car accident when she was 17 in Texas and at the wheel of a car that hit another, killing the driver, a fellow student.
"I lost my faith that November, lost it for many, many years," she writes.
"It was the first time that I had prayed to God for something, begged him for something, not the simple childhood wishing on a star but humbly begging for another human life. And it was as if no one heard."
The book is also devoted, according to the Times report, to rebutting critics of her husband. She calls insulting comments by the Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid "uncalled for and graceless."

Good for Laura — setting the record straight. I do not remember hearing of this incident at the G8. Was it hushed up?
Liberals automatic response system: “BUSH’S FAU ...ah, hang on a sec ... Please hold while the Liberal automatic response system reboots ... CHENEY’S FAULT!!!”
Laura is a Wonderful, Loving Leader and Humanist! She should called Dinghy Harry out for what he really is! A Treasonous, Unethical, Lieing Scumbag! but She is much to Good to actually say what the Lieing Bastard really is!.:-)
Harry Reid and “grace” are like oil and water.

I think if Ms Laura wrote this, she had strong reason to suspect it was not a normal viral kind of illness.
President Bush was pretty sick, bedridden for awhile, and it impacted several staff members, not just the President and First Lady. One would think that if it were food poisoning it would have impacted people beyond the Bush team. Maybe a flu, but it seemed strange, even at the time. It was covered in the news, but only as Bush missing meetings due to illness.
Eating German food sometimes takes a bit of getting used to by tender American tummies..
I've had what could have been "food poisoning" no more than a half dozen times in my life...and I'm not a kid.Assuming that I have a pretty normal GI tract I would think that the same could be said of anyone my age..and me and Mrs Bush are only a few years apart. All I remember is that you can have cramps and might spend some time in the bathroom...if ya catch my drift. Were their symptoms like this? Worse? Much worse? Entirely different? Were they hospitalized? Did they recover fairly quickly...or very quickly?
Yes,world leaders are potential targets of killers...as are members of their family. But such folks can also, from time to time, get a bad piece of fish and suffer the consequences (cramps, bathroom, etc).

And then you have German - Chinees food. 30 minutes after you eat it you’re again hungry.......For POWER.
(OK it’s an oldie but so am I ;-)
The times I’ve had food poisoning, actual stuff, I
just wanted to DIE, I had to sit on the commode and throw
up in the sink at the same time, along with flash fever
and then cold chills and sweats, deep down ache, I never
want to go through that again, we aren’t just talking about
having cramps and the runs, it was awefull. Once from
eating an egg buscuit that had been under the heat lamp
for too long. My friend and I both had them, later I looked at him and said, “You look terrible!” He looked at me and
said, “YOU look terrible!” then we both threw up and were
sick for the next 12 hrs. Honestly there came a time during
the night when I just wanted it to end, please just let
me die.
Had it once in Nam like that, horrible.

People have been fleeing Europe to come to the New World for centuries to escape European food.
But Vietnam certainly could be different. As Robin Williams,as Adrian Cronauer, said "is there anything here that *doesn't* give you diarrhea?"
I once was stupid enough to heat up a can of asparagus that, when I opened it, didn’t hiss. IOW, it already had a hole in it. Stupid, monumentally stupid.
Well, it tasted fine going down. Coming back up a few hours later was...less pleasant. I thought that I had an alien in my belly that was trying to come out through my stomach, just like in the movie. I couldn’t eat for 3 days, could only stomach some weak soup and water starting around mid-day of day 2. I wasn’t fat, but I lost 12 pounds in 3 days. I’ve never been so sick in my life.
Bush and those around him could have eaten bad food like this and never noticed a strange taste.
This is not possible. The prez’s food is closely guarded. I wonder why Mrs. Bush would say this?
I am going to buy her book. This is a smart lady and something did not add up with their illness.
Perhaps so, but it could not have been the food. Something else maybe?
“they became ill at a summit in Germany in 2007”
I never heard about even the President being ill for any big visit.
Given most of us Americans have German blood and more than any other ethnicity, it may not be that difficult.
Sauerkraut and Sausage!
Never mind the best sweet “baking” in the world.
