Perhaps it would have been better for someone to have quietly spoken to the owner of the store and explained our customs regarding the U.S. flag.

Tell me, if you lived down in Mexico and had a flag pole, what would common sense tell you? That perhaps the Mexican flag would fly on top? These mexicans may not have been responsible for that flag pole. Neither of them may have been the owner but they knew it was wrong. Don't fall for that line that too many immigrants do now days. Caught in something they don't like or don't want to do, it's no habla English.
