Madison, NC -(AmmoLand.com)- After almost a century, the Model 1911 R1 marks the Remington brands return to the manufacture of the legendary 1911 handgun.
In 1917, the U.S. Ordnance Department issued an order to Remington-UMC to manufacture 500,000 1911s for our fighting men in the armed services.
The first Remington-UMC produced 1911 pistols were delivered in August of 1918. On November 11, 1918, the Armistice ending WWI was signed and the contract from the Ordnance Department with Remington-UMC was suspended. In all, Remington-UMC produced 21,677 1911s.
You could say the 1911 was firmly implanted in our DNA, and now after 91 years, its back.
The Remington-branded 1911 R1 is an A1 variant of the 1911 with modern upgrades. Like the original 1911, the 1911 R1 has a flat mainspring housing, short trigger and double diamond grips. 1911 devotees will appreciate the modern enhancements on the 1911 R1, such as a flared and lowered ejection port; beveled magazine well; loaded chamber indicator; high profile dovetailed single-dot front and two-dot rear sights; a crisp 3.5 5 pound trigger pull; and a match grade stainless steel barrel and barrel bushing.

Sweet, but not ambidextrous?
I’ve the MK4 series 70 that I bought to allow myself to carry a pistol while playing medic, since somehow there never seemed to be enough out of our arms room.
But the current carry is a USPc .40 S&W.
And that’s not likely to change.
Too, I’m not ambidextrous, so why would I care if the pistol is?
Finally, although the pistol goes on with the pants, the correct move is to take your rifle, and I’m retraining my instincts!
What’s the price?
Well all you large caliber fellers may be right. But I have read more than enough NRA mags with self defense stories to know that granny’s .22 wheel gun is just fine for home defense.

"Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Click."
"Oh, yeah? Well BANG!!! BANG!!! BANG!!! BANG!!! BANG!!! BANG!!! BANG!!! Click."
Hard to argue with either position, really :)
I like Kimber, I once had one of their .22 bolt actions which I foolishly sold.
I am not sure I agree that the Kimber is better than the Colts. Every Colt commercial .45 I have ever seen has been extraordinarily well made.
They are all BS reviews bought and paid for.
While the 1911 is one of the all time great designs, I actually think Star improved upon it. Their model P uses a better system for the safety-slide stop tension.
That staked in spring tunnel will eventually loosen with use.
I’m a big fan of .45 ACP, and the first weapon I ever fired was a 1911 Colt 45. Before I retired from the Navy, we used to be able to go up to the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, Virginia with our own ammo and use the firing range and the many old 1911 Colts they had up there. If it jammed, no sweat. Grab another one and one of the gunsmiths would repair it.
I have a Glock 21 just because I like it, but the gun is really too light for me and the heavier 1911 is what I am used to. The mass of the 1911 helps absorb some of the recoil that a plastic grip cannot, and I’ve had to seriously address my grip, stance, aim and pull with the Glock. Not a hit on Glocks, just an acknowledgement of the differences....
I would love to shoot a couple of boxes of ammo through one of these new 1911s and see how she feels. 700 bones is a lot of money, but it depends on the value...I may start saving my pennies.....
I believe the review said they had JHP jams. If one of those magazines like G&A or Shooting Times says ANYTHING even remotely negative, beware.
Beauuuuuutiful!
Nice entry into the 1911 market. Should be a good value at just over $600.
The 1911 in .45ACP is God’s handgun!
Damn sexy looking gun too. What a beauty.
“I read the street price is being talked about as being around $615.”
WOW.

It also has the Series 80-style firing pin block safety. The Remington 1911 R1 will be shipped in a custom carry case with two seven-round magazines and a barrel bushing wrench.
NO thanks, if JMB didn't put it in there, I'll pass. The new(er) Rock Island Arms 45 GI is a bone stock GI Issue M1911A1 w/ flat mainspring. It's a 8+1 and looks pretty much like a WWII issue piece.
At 400 USD, The Rock Island GI is the least cost new M1911A1 45 ACP out there - if I'm wrong on that, I'm sure someone will be nice enuf to let me know....
$400! Wow! That is a heck of a deal. Doesn’t Rock Island also offer AR-15s?
Nope just the pistols, made in the PI, by Armscor, they supply the PI military.
And since they are still shooting at Moros.... seems right for some reason.
AS for the Ar, maybe you are thinking of Rock River Arms?
