State parties counter Obama visits

State Republican parties in three areas that President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit this week are organizing rallies to counterprogram his trip.

In Iowa, Missouri and Illinois – where the president plans to talk up his economic program in a series of appearances aimed at rural America – local GOP leaders are planning "Stand Up for Freedom" rallies, featuring state Republican officials and members of Congress participating via Skype.

As Democrats seek to grasp political momentum through Obama’s “White House to Main Street” road trip and an aggressive debate over financial regulatory reform, the Republican demonstrations could be a test of the president's continued potency as a figure for Republicans to organize against.

The first GOP rally is set to take place in Iowa Monday night, with an event featuring state Republican Chairman Matt Strawn and the four GOP congressional candidates vying to face Democratic Rep. Dave Loebsack in the state’s 2nd Congressional District, according to a GOP official. Republican Rep. Steve King, a frequent speaker at conservative and tea party demonstrations, is slated to address the gathering through Skype.

Former Illinois gubernatorial candidate Adam Andrzejewkski will be at the event in his state, and Missouri Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer plans to participate remotely in the Missouri rally.

The president plans three stops in Iowa on Tuesday – Fort Madison, Mt. Pleasant and Ottumwa, where he’ll hold a town meeting – and stops Wednesday in Macon, Mo., and Quincy, Ill., where he’ll speak at the civic center before heading back to Washington.

“The president will return this week to Iowa,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs reminded reporters well aware of the looming 2012 presidential campaign, “where the process begins with a series of community meetings that helps you build support.”

an aggressive debate over financial regulatory reform?

How about we keep the focus on the failure of porkulus, the crappy economy, the impending obozocare disaster. Oh and let's not forget Obama's ugly deficit.

I think they feel emboldened because Obozo and his policies are largely becoming unpopular with the masses.

IOW, highlight his “successes”. Other topics could include “job creation” where there were none (except 1.2 million Census goons pounding the pavement).

I enjoy thinking that the Tea Parties had something to do with that. Thousands of Americans are waking up and paying more attention thanks to the Tea Parties. God bless 'em!

Yes sir. Don't let Obama control the debate with this financial overhaul thing.

Republicans came out of their cave when they realized what they thought was a blood thirsty lion was actually a flea ridden, mangy, alley cat that’s been getting chased off by tea part folks.

Oh we can hope, but I don't believe so. Huge Hewitt was rambling on today about he sure hopes the GOP does not address the AZ Immigration Law because that will really really hurt the GOP chances in Nov 2010 because we must have the Latino votes or we don't win - the caller said what? We have never had their vote and then Huge went off about how GWB carried the Latino vote. Also I thought I heard him complaining about the GOP standing tall against the Financial Reform Act another play right into the RATs playbook, and how the GOP needs to reach across the aisle and reach a compromise for Nov 2010.

I am giving up listening to anyone on TRN except Mark Levin with is #2 in my book.

10% unemployment, his party is going to suffer major losses this fall, and all the King Barry can think about is the next campaign. This worked for Clinton in the '90s, but this isn't the '90s.

In my opinion, when a POTUS goes on a purely political trip inside the US....then he is not entitled to the protections normally afforded a POTUS, because he is acting on his own behalf and not that of the nation. HE should have to pay the full cost of paying for the secret service and other law enforcement types to provide him cover and security. The costs of flying Air Force one, and the other associated costs should be born by him and not the taxpayers.

The local politicians of the states he visits should be entitled to fully interupt and usurp the POTUS’ visits to that state. The local or state elected politicians were more directly elected than any POTUS. It is their home turf and a POTUS should stay away WHEN on a strictly political agenda like these.

I do not want to ever endanger a POTUS, but many have abused their need for protection wrongly. When on federal property (DoD) or strictly acting as POTUS should be the only time they should have a free ride and free reign to move around unimpeded by locals. The POTUS needs to stay in D.C.

I don’t think I have done a good job of explaining my position.

I would so love to watch this punk, man-child come unglued!

Deep in his heart, he knows his entire career has been based on affirmative-action, not real skill sets!

From a purely Machiavellian point of view, the republicans should be embracing conservatism because it will put them in power. That should be their thought in every race across the country. Tapping into the hatred of large government, huge deficits etc... is a winner. That’s how they can get into power.

They get to stay in power if they govern according to conservative principles. If they don’t, vote them out and replace with someone who will.
