Fears of Arizona's Immigration Law Are Bogus
Fox News ^ | April 26, 2010 | John R. Lott Jr.

When Arizona's new law was signed on Friday, Hispanics demonstrated outside the state capitol in Phoenix, fearful of what it would mean for them. "If a cop sees them and they look Mexican, he's going to stop me," a 18-year-old Hispanic told the Associated Press. "What if people are U.S. citizens? They're going to be asking them if they have papers because of the color of their skin." The young man claimed that he was that even though he was a U.S. citizen he risked being arrested and put in jail.

Other news stories discuss Hispanics believing that they will have to have to carry multiple IDs to avoid prison. "Even if you're legal, you're in fear that maybe your driver's license isn't going to be enough or if you're walking down the street and the police stop you," a 21-year-old University of Arizona college student told CNN. "It's a constant fear we're living in and even legal citizens are afraid to go out."

But it is a dangerous game stirring up fears of people being hunted down and put in jail because of their race or nationality. The law specifically bans picking up someone just because they are Hispanic or even because the person was originally from Mexico or any other country you can read a copy of the law right here. . . .

Excellent article....and the hysteria is not based on any fact...except the fact that it is going to be a lot tougher to be an Illegal Alien in Arizona.....one state down, forty-nine (or fifty-six more, according to Obama) to go

LOL - I may be exaggerating a little bit in order to provoke a response. There was no damage, but they did leave quite a mess and didn’t rearrange my glove box. If the Border Patrol can put up a checkpoint 100 miles North of the border, what is legally stopping them from setting up checkpoints outside of major towns? I don’t like the idea of a checkpoint for American citizens to go through when the Federal Government is doing such a poor job guarding the actual borders.

The highway check points are visible to ordinary citizens and enforcement at the border is largely unseen. They are trying to convince us that they are trying to do something about enforcement, but they really have no intention of doing effective things.
They are prosecuting one resturant owner here in SD, but that could be hundreds of others. Is that the only one that has no matches on SS#’s. Doubt it.

I got stopped at an agricultural checkpoint once in AZ. Besides asking if I had any fruits or vegetables they asked me what my nationality was.

At first I thought they were yanking my chain because I’m about as WASP as they come. Then when I saw they were serious I told them “American”. Happy with that they let me go.

Excellent point !! They are angry at the wrong people. You made me think about my grandfather and a similar incident. In 1942, the very month his son, my father, landed on Guadalcanal with the US Marines, he was questioned by the FBI about his loyalty to this country. His crime? He was a subscriber to an Italian language newspaper!! When I was a kid and filled with righteous anger at the treatment of my grandfather I asked him if he blamed the government for his harassment.....my grandfather just smiled and shrugged and said no, he didn't blame the FBI, HE BLAMED MUSSOLINI for giving Italian Americans a bad name. I learned a great lesson that day.

I share your point....these Mexican Americans should be angry at the illegals running across the border not the state of Arizona trying to deal with this huge problem

What type of checkpoint was it- Border Patrol or other? many people have taken the BP checkpoints to court over the years and they have been found constituional. Border Patrol has extraordinary powers within so many miles of the border. Where I live we deal with BP checkpoints and traffic stops regularly. I have never felt hassled, but I know some that do feel they have been.
