A fundraiser for Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman today at the Sutter Club in Sacramento drew the second installment of the nurses union's traveling Queen Meg protest road show, which debuted last night in Beverly Hills.
As Whitman, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and their supporters met in the club, several dozen nurses, state employees and others made a ruckus on the sidewalk, holding signs reading "Queen Meg, Rich Enough to Rule! 2010."
Sacramento resident Renee Lee, a call center representative at the Franchise Tax Board who participated, said she objected to Whitman's calls to cut 40,000 state worker positions, saying the state would no longer be able to operate adequately.

The crowd engaged in a series of chants: "Wealth, not health," "We can't afford democracy, so why not try a monarchy?"

According to the California Governor’s Budget proposals, and it shows deficits as far as the eye can see, growing from $5 billion next year (by+1) to $15 billion in by+3. This is optimistic if for no other reason than it assumes we do all the Governor asked the State Legislature to do to solve the $20 billion immediate problem.
Without any solutions, the deficits look much worse - add roughly $19 billion per year to the figures.
Then you would probably want to discount a bit for the economy - I think the revenue forecast is rosy, and as we watch the daily income tax deposits, a lot of us are getting increasingly more nervous. As of yesterday, they had only banked 39% of estimated April deposits...
So, when the unions protest, they are saying “Screw you!” to the taxpayers in CA. They are willing to bankrupt the country in order that they receive no cuts in salaries and benefits.
