Colorado lawmakers this week unveiled a major overhaul of the state's college tuition program that seeks to raise an additional $300 million by requiring parents and students to pay more.

Lawmakers announced the move as a way to help the state cover a projected $1.7 billion budget shortfall next fall. If approved, the measure would go into effect this November.

In exchange, colleges would have to meet strict goals for graduation and employment of students or they would have to roll back tuition increases.

it's not unreasonable to ask students to work 10 hours a week during the semester and 40 hours a week in the summer to help pay for their future.

At the moment, parents are willing to go into hock to get their kids college educations, all the more so because of the financial crunch.

But a few years from now, if they see lots of kids graduating from top colleges but not getting any jobs, they may just change their minds about this.

The out-of-state cost for U Colorado at Boulder is already astronomical. It’s a great place, but how much higher can they go? And I presume that, like most colleges, they have been spending money hand over fist after having gotten into the habit of perpetually raising tuition to cover it.

At some point, this is going hit a brick wall.

Many college kids have lots of extra money for illegal drugs and too much free time to hang out / not studying.

The old Ward Churchill department is still there; it should be closed as a waste of money and...

Several other useless departments and degrees.

No doubt only for those that have the ability to pay.

Are there ILLEGALS in CO getting in-state tuition rates? Maybe free tuition? While families of tax-paying U.S. citizens paying full price (with rates that increase higher than inflation) - with no access to scholarships?

Steve Jordan, president of Metropolitan State College of Denver, “People will think a failure to achieve a goal is a failure of the institution. Rather than buying into goals, we’re going to reduce goals,” he said.

fire this man right now. He is no leader - merely a follower of his lefty minions. It’s his job to set and enforce standards. If he can’t do it, find someone who can and give them the tools to do so.

It may be SAR now, but look at the boilerplate of what Obama just did with the student loan program and for sure that’s where they are headed.

One of my kids was interested in going to Boulder. She ended up going elsewhere, where they had better courses in the field she was interested in. But I told her, “You may have to tell them you’re an illegal alien, so I can afford the tuition.”
