WASHINGTON — The gap between the cost of renting a modest apartment and the wages of working families continues to widen, according to a new report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

"Out of Reach 2010" paints a gloomy picture for the nation's nearly 38 million renters, who make up a third of U.S. households.

On average, a family must earn $38,355 a year, $18.44 an hour, to afford a simple two-bedroom apartment at the 2010 national average fair market rent of $959.

Another crisis. Time to regulate what landlords can charge.

Our pockets are about to be picked again.

For the record, the economics of this report do not add up. The premise that housing projects are being eliminated for upscale housing does not make sense, given that housing starts are way down from historic levels.

How long until “Section 8” won’t be voluntary for landlords anymore?

Sounds like more Libeal BS to set us up for more liberalism, ie paying for someone’s rent.

Rents in many if not all of Californicator dropped during the economic meltdown and have stayed down.

Maybe rent is up in DC with all of OHAHA’s carpet baggers moving in.

With people losing their homes in record numbers, this is the next biggest scandal.

People are already moving out of high tax states like New York, California, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts and many others in record numbers as well.

Part of this problem is the union pension benefits in these high tax states that are going to support state workers and other union members which is unsustainable over any long period of time. These states are finding that out and their revenues will continue to collapse as more and more people move out of these states and into more friendly states that do not raise taxes.

With our national economy and staggering national debt, this will continue until Americans wise up and elect fiscally conservative politicians in all fifty states.

Rents in Tucson are comparable to what they were 30 years ago. Many offer free move-in, and a reasonable apartment might start at $500, more as you add bedrooms.

You can rent a house for $1000.

So you rent a house for $1000. The problem remains: you’re still in Tucson.

“Minimum wage earners are at the greatest disadvantage. Under the standard measure of affordability — housing costs should account for no more than 30 percent of income — full-time minimum wage earners can’t afford one-bedroom apartments in any county in the country, even though Congress increased the minimum wage from $6.55 an hour to $7.25 last year.”

Minimum wage earners aren’t supposed to be raising a family. If you are 30 and making minimum, you have already made a lot of bad decisions...

I’ve been looking, and basic, bare-bones, one-bedroom apartments with nothing fancy, (no dishwashers, no central air, no fireplaces, etc.,) are going for at least $1,300 a month. A friend of mine was telling me she can’t even find senior housing for less than $1,000 a month.

Obamacare just added new Medicare taxation of 3.8% to rental income profit. It’s a new tax!

Renters - your rent will go up.

There is only so much taxation cost a landlord will absorb before a rental increase.

It is a chilly April day here south of Tucson...high of 60 for today. By Monday, it should be 80 & sunny.

Live where you want, but don’t whine about it.
