An Iranian Air Force commander announced here on Tuesday that the country overhauls and optimizes different types of military aircraft, mentioning that Air Force has even installed Iran-made radar systems on the sophisticated F14 fighter jets.

"Indeed, it can be said that most airplanes have the previous designs but all of their components, including systems and parts, are being optimized and upgraded on a continued and regular basis," Iranian Air Force Lieutenant Commander for Coordination General Aziz Nasirzadeh said in an interview with FNA on Tuesday.

The commander stated that mounting optimized home-made 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) smart bombs, Qassed (Messenger), on Iranian bombers is an instance of the country's capability to upgrade its fighter jets.

The Iranian Army's Air Force announced in September that it has successfully test-fired Qassed (Messenger) 1and 2, in aerial drills over the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Referring to the promotion of the systems and capabilities of F14 fighter jets, Nasirzadeh said, "…today we have a new generation of F14 fighters at our service, and its radar system has been upgraded by our local experts."

Reiterating that the new radar system has been built and installed on the F14 fighter jets by the Iranian personnel, the General added, "Therefore, we can enhance and upgrade it (radar) continuously.

LOL! This is hilarious. Iran is going to rework F-14 and it’s avionics.

Sorry Persians but they ain’t 55 Chevys in Cuba. I doubt Grumman could work on them at this point.

All the indigenous upgraded avionics and smart bombs (hard to type that without laughing) won’t keep an old airframe from crumbling.

It’s sad to think that my beloved Tomcat is only in the service of one nation, and that nation is an enemy of America.

The f-18 or the f-22 will splash the 14 in a heartbeat. 2 F-22’s could take out every jet fighter they have before they even know that anyone is around. Is there enough room in there for all those virgins?????

Yeah, I could probably replace the 8-track in my ‘69 Mustang with a docking port for my iPod too.

Aside from the upgrade nonsense, they must also be dealing with (or ignoring?)some serious airframe stress/corrosion issues. Talk by Iran of upgrading these aircraft is an indication of weakness, not strength.

I would have to agree there. I doubt that any of those airframes are actually safe to fly and I have to wonder how often they actually take to the air.

Lord knows that if their petchem industrial maintenance is anything to go by, any pilot that straps into an Iranian F-14 must be totally cool with potential martyrdom because there is at least a 50-50 chance he won’t be landing in one piece.

yeah it is pretty delusional and I am no expert. The F-14 has the swing wing going plus twin engines etc. Sounds like a lot of maintenance, a lot of stuff to check out. The USA retired F-14s and is anyone elese flying them in the world?

The last time Grumman was there training anyone to work on it was probably when Carter was in office. So a 20-30 year old Iranian mechanic is now 50 or 60.

It is pretty laughable.

Can you imagine hitting the afterburners, assuming you get it off the ground. And unless some old guy from Grumman was there working on it then when it goes swingwing it would be interesting.

Maybe a single engine F-5 but an F-14 probably requires a lot of maintenance.
