In Hawaii's Special Election, Neither Democrat Can Vote for Themselves

Sometimes I'm willing to cut a candidate some slack about living in the district; those lines are sometimes gerrymandered wildly, and so it's not unthinkable for a person to live in one district but work and spend most of his time in another, and prefer to run in the neighboring one.

But Hawaii's district lines seem relatively simple; the 1st district is Honolulu and the 2nd district is everyplace else.

In the Hawaiian special election, the Democrats have the complication of two major candidates against one Republican in a winner-take-all race, and yet neither one lives in the district. Neither Ed Case nor Colleen Hanabusa will be able to cast a vote for themselves.

"It's a factor for voters to consider," said Case, who lives in Kaneohe, where Djou lived less than a decade ago. "But the real question is not where one lives, but who best knows, understands and represents a district and its people. I've spent far more of my life in the 1st than either of my principal opponents."

Hanabusa, who lives in Kapolei, said both Case and Djou have moved in and out of districts in past runs for office.

Neither one lives far from the district; Kapolei is on the other side of Mamala Bay; Kaneohe is on the other side of a mountain range. But it's a bit surprising to see the Democrats going 0-for-2.

If I were Djou I'd point this out. He needs to protrat himself as the real McCoy. The adult while his two opponents slug it out.

Anyone who votes for the someone who doesn’t live in the district, state or country that he/she wishes to represent has no business voting!

Other than the whole, "I'll vote in this district if I want to, and no one will stop me" factor. Thanks Maelstorm.
