I was stationed in Buenos Aires 1986-1989. It was an economic basket then and it doesn’t seem to have improved any. Even though the Alfonsin “regime” tried its best, the unions could never get enough. The military tried several times to exert its influence and always ended up backing down. In the 19th Century, Argentina felt that they should be the pre-eminent power in the western hemisphere and to this day they resent the USA for grabbing that brass ring. Even though the Brits pretty much humilitated them in 1982, they STILL like the Brits better than they like us. Individually, Argies are great people, but collectively, they can be real pains. Beautiful women, outstanding steak, world class wine. What’s not to like?
