>>>This president, quite obviously, is uncomfortable with the idea of himself as the Leader of the Free World. He believes, rather, that America is unworthy of such global leadership. How else to explain his rejection of the idea of American exceptionalism?<<<

Holiness
(Heb. kedushah). A religious quality or value invested in special objects, places, times, and persons. The root meaning of kedushah and its derivatives is "to be set apart" or "distinguished." The source of all holiness is the holiness of God, "the Holy One, blessed be He." Several times in the Bible, the people of Israel is exhorted to be holy because God is holy (e.g., Lev. 19:2). To describe God as holy in this context means to say that He is totally transcendent. He is the great Other, over and above the universe and all things in it. When the attribute of holiness is ascribed to God, it also embraces His awesomeness. Thus, the liturgy for the High Holidays celebrates God as Kadosh ve-Nora, "holy and awesome."
>>>
When, however, the concept of holiness is applied to the people of Israel and held up to its members as the ultimate religious ideal, only the idea of separateness is invoked. Thus, just as God is holy, i.e., separate and distinguished from all other existences, so Israel should be separate and distinguished from all other peoples (Ex. 19:6; Lev. 19:2, 20:7). Holiness as a quality of life for the people of Israel is not an abstract concept. The rabbis maintained that Israel's holiness, experienced in its separateness from other peoples, is to be translated in practice into a distinctive pattern of behavior. In the Pentateuch, the call to holiness is first and foremost a call for imitatio Dei (see Imitation of God): "You shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am holy" (Lev. 19:2).

Revelation 13:5-7
5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

The rabbis maintained that Israel's holiness, experienced in its separateness from other peoples, is to be translated in practice into a distinctive pattern of behavior.
The concept was first used in respect of the United States by Alexis de Tocqueville in 1831 in his work Democracy in America:[14]
The position of the Americans is therefore quite exceptional, and it may be believed that no democratic people will ever be placed in a similar one. Their strictly Puritanical origin, their exclusively commercial habits, even the country they inhabit, which seems to divert their minds from the pursuit of science, literature, and the arts, the proximity of Europe, which allows them to neglect these pursuits without relapsing into barbarism, a thousand special causes, of which I have only been able to point out the most important, have singularly concurred to fix the mind of the American upon purely practical objects. His passions, his wants, his education, and everything about him seem to unite in drawing the native of the United States earthward; his religion alone bids him turn, from time to time, a transient and distracted glance to heaven. Let us cease, then, to view all democratic nations under the example of the American people.[15]
Revelation 13:8-9
8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
