Rest in Peace, Darryl. You were a GREAT man.
...I liked it when he pulled his cops out of the rioting neighborhoods, but it would have been better to warn the public first over the radio/TV...lot of innocent whites got stomped and beaten for straying into negro neighborhoods.
Hmmm - I don’t know about that. He seems to have been in on the manufacturing of evidence that contributed to O.J. Simpson walking. The sock and the video not showing it, for one, contributed a lot to the “not guilty” verdict.
It didn’t matter what evidence there was, OJ was never going to be pronounced guilty by that jury. The prosecutors were too busy sleeping with each other to get a clue during jury selection.
“It didnt matter what evidence there was, OJ was never going to be pronounced guilty by that jury.”
....you got that right!...too many urban courtrooms are that way now...jury nullification is SOP and they cut the brother loose.
I heard from somewhere (long time ago) that the riots stopped on a Tuesday because the USPS wouldn’t deliver the welfare checks which go out on Wednesday into a riot zone. Any truth to that?
And nice job on the OJ thing, Darryl....
L.A.’s last police chief.
I was training out there right after the riots. I stopped at the intersection of Florence and Normandy (where Reginald Denny was pulled from his truck and got his head caved in with a brick) to take a picture of the big white HOLLYWOOD letters on the hill. My instructor/guide/passenger couldn’t stop shaking until we left.
His failings lead to the Rodney King riots. No, he did not mishandle the OJ investigation, he wasn't involved in it, other than being briefed because of the notoriety of the case. It was not he, who pulled the cops off the street during the RK riot. He was outraged at the police captain who failed to react swiftly and forcefully in the early stages of the first day.
It was, however, his failure to select the right kind of leaders within the department that lead to the mishandling of the riot. He failed to recognize that LAPD officers were not being trained in civil disorder management. He isolated and insulated himself by picking leaders who thought like himself, thereby leaving a huge blind spot in his management.
During the early 1990's, prior to the riot in '92, he stripped over 1000 of the best senior officers from the patrol force and assigned them to narcotics enforcement, thereby depriving the patrol force with these officers and leaving the patrol force understrength and heavily laden with inexperienced officers. Then came the riot.
Yes, I knew Darryl F. Gates...
Thanks for that post. Good to get the inside story.
My son flew out to LA in the early 90’s for a police exam. Got all the way out there (from MA) and was told(paraphrasing here),”Oops,we gave you the wrong date.”
Nothing to do with Gates, but your post made me think of that incident.
He didn’t return.
Good explanation...Book OFFICIAL NEGLIGENCE did a good job explaining LAPD’s handling of riots as well.
