NYPD detectives now have to ask for permission if they want to use unmarked cars

Detectives who need to park near courthouses now have to ask for permission if they want to use their unmarked cars, the Daily News has learned.

The directive comes in the wake of revelations by The News that the NYPD has been towing unmarked cop cars, leaving detectives stranded with no way to transport suspects, witnesses or victims.

The NYPD says the towing, carried out by traffic enforcement agents under the direction of the Internal Affairs Bureau, is necessary to prevent detectives from blocking hydrants and crosswalks and parking on sidewalks.

For some reason that parody song by Weird Al, “Stop Dragging My Car Around” comes to mind.

Now they can relate to the people that pay their tax paid salaries.

Rather un-bright robbers have already left behind wallets (complete with genuine I.D.) and kids, among other things.

I wonder if there is some union based grudge between the dick tracies and the ticket writers. Like the ticket writers bucking for more pay. Normally you’d think the ticket writers would first check with HQ whether a questionably parked car close to a courthouse belongs to the police, and would even feed meters if necessary.

WOW! Parking cops and tow truck drivers can't tell an unmarked car when they're right up next to it?

How STUPID can these people be?

They can tell, and the photo shows NYPD ID on the dash. Looks like a grudge match to me.
Here’s the main problem besides wasting the time of the tow guys and ticket writers, and the dicks. The dicks get paid the same whether they are standing around the courthouse with no ride or out doing their investiagting.

No kidding. Cops are the most visible government employees, yet they make no effort at all to lead by example. Parking wherever they feel like it, making illegal turns, ignoring speed limits.

Was the ID put there for the sake of a news photo?

If the dick tracies are really concerned about bringing a witness without said witness being seen in a police car, the ID would be foregone as well.

The permission asking protocol at least assures the car is put on the ticket writers’ short list before the go ahead is given to use the car. The answer to the request would never be “no” but it might be “wait till we update the computer.”

Could be.
Can’t speak for the NYPD, but everywhere else, one routinely runs the plate of the car being impounded. Don’t have any idea how many normal detective cars are issued with phony plates. Those are usually reserved for undercover types, but maybe NYPD issues them to all detective cars. Point being, under normal circumstances the plate would be an “exempt” govt plate.
I suspect that they’ve asked the dicks, in the past, to improve their parking practices and have gotten zero response.

I’d like to see more towing of those cars.
Police officers park where ever they stop, even in non-emergencies. I’ve been blocked in while an officer filled out paperwork.
