Flood waters are striking the Fljotshlid area near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. This flood is said to be much bigger and faster than yesterdays and people in that area of South Iceland are being told to evacuate immediately....
The flood water contains large chunks of ice and roads and bridges south of the glacier are in serious danger of destruction.
Holy Carp!
“Eyja-fjalla-jökull
islands-mountains-glacier
The name basically means it is the glacier on top of Eyjafjöll, which is the name of the mountain range, which incidentally means mountains of islands.”
Actually, Leifur posted this on an earlier thread, and I remembered it. Hope that helps.
majestic, terrifying and awe-inspiring all at once. We are rather insignificant in geologic terms.
I had thought of Iceland as a possible place to migrate to.
They have seriously piss-d off the Gods...
Caused by Climate change. Right?
Most volcanoes require that you sacrifice a virgin, but I figure since Al Gore has never actually used his brain he is a virgin in that respect and the Volcano will probably accept him as a sacrifice.
Play it safe. Don’t just throw in Gore for Thor. Add Obama for Pele.
It's a town in South Africa. It means "Two buffaloes shot dead with one shot Fountain" ... I kid you not. Why Fountain? A small river made a sound like a fountain, hence fountain = fontein (Afrikaans).
I'm not a know-it-all,I grew up in SA. It's a pretty odd name ..
More like Mountain Warming...
I think that once Eyjafjallajokull sends their surplus vowels to Kyrgyzstan, the floods will recede.
He's never forgiven Bjork for leaving the Sugarcubes.
I like to peruse the raw images ( which I learned of on this forum! ) because you can get the oversized higher resolution images and see more detail. Here's the 500m pixel size version of the 11:35 Terra image.
Thanks TaraP.
Awesome pic dr_lew. Thanks for posting the link. Hotlinking it would sure slow this thread down a bit. :-)
LOL..Are you a reminder of the news source?
I have to correct myself a little from earlier, the name of Eyjafjöll, island mountains comes directly from the string of island due south of them, the Vestmann Island (that had a volcano erupt practically in the midst of a town of around 5000 souls at the date of 23.01.1973, thankfully no one died directly, though fumes killed one that did not heed the warnings of the civil defence authorities).
NOW would be good time to check this webcam, the skies are clearing (the one with view from the town of Hvolsvöllur):
Here are some pictues:

And then finally, how to pronounce this beautiful name:

Like one of the comment succests, maybe they should try these words:
Hæstaréttarmálaflutningsmaður
Kirkjubæjarklaustur
vaðlaheiðarvegavinnuverkfærageymsluskúraútidyralyklakippuhringur
Yeah, even though I do not speak Icelandic, it is funny to hear others try to pronounce Icelandic words that I do know how to say.
Thank you for the laugh, Leifur. :)
You're forgiven this time . . .
