As a retired NCO/Officer the reports that they would fire or march sharply toward the crowd with fixed bayonets is crap. Today’s officers and enlisted troops are a lot more intelligent and informed as well as closely connected to the general population than what has gone on in the distant past such as Dugout Doug leading troops against the Bonus Army. The time of mindless charges against reinforced positions such as Galipoli are gone because military members at all levels are now volunteers, still connected members of the civilian population and better educated than ever before.
The Zimbardo experiments were just that, isolated experiments that had carefully laid out parameters.
