Yes, it was the NG. I have no knowledge of their training, though. Those were horrible times. I hope it doesn’t come to that again but I fear it will.

I was in college when Kent State occurred; a Vietnam Vet going on the GI Bill, along with working the night shift at a local truck stop (that's another story for another time). But, back on subject, the NG of the Vietnam era was not the same as the NG of this era. Today's NG and Reserve units are highly trained and motivated and are carrying their fair share of the load in Iraq and Afghanistan. A far different situation from the NG and Reserve units of the Viet era. In those days, these units were refuges for those lucky enough or who's parents or employers had enough influence to get them in so to avoid being drafted. Training was minimal and summer camps were primarily male beer drinking and poker playing campouts. Also, the dynamics were different; Vietnam cast cultural conservatives against young counter cultural liberals which were primarily driven and influenced by socialists, communists, and annarchists. The young were what's known in the left's lexicon as "useful idiots". Today, it's somewhat the same dynamic except today's conservatives are willing to stand up and be seen and heard (Tea Party)? Also, today's military is very conservative and is polically aligned with the right as their parents, siblings, etc. Obama and his goons are aware of this hence his statement "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.” Obama, Pelosi, Reid and their kind are aware that it is problamatic whether U.S. troops will take aggressive action against civilians. So, he eventually will have his own para-military force to deal with whatever is deemed as civilian disobiedence or unrest. Keep an eye on the upcoming 16,000 IRS hires - if these new hires are typical financial types or bean counters it's one thing but if many of them are more of the SWAT or Special Op's type, then we may have an inkling as to how his Civilian National Security Force will come to be. Hold on tight, it's coming...
