Florida girl rescued from swamp 'doing remarkably well'

Nadia Bloom, 11, had spent four days in the alligator-infested area.

An 11-year-old girl was being treated Tuesday for insect bites and dehydration in a Florida hospital after spending four days in alligator-infested woods and swampland.

Rescuers and other law enforcement officials carried Nadia Bloom out of the woods in a sling more than three hours after rescuer James King called 911 to report he had found her.

King, 44, of Orlando, Fla., was a volunteer searcher who is a member of Metro Church, where the child's family worships.

"I didn't all of a sudden see her," King said. "I was yelling, 'Nadia! Nadia!' and she said, 'What?' "

Nadia's father, Jeff, thanked the rescuers.

"It all came so fast, and it just shows the compassion of the human spirit. It should give everybody encouragement," he told reporters after rescue crews lifted his daughter into an ambulance. "I can't even describe it. Let's give the glory to God."

Nadia, who has an autism-related disorder called Asperger's syndrome, was covered in bug bites, her feet were waterlogged, and she was dehydrated, officials said. She was not wearing shoes when she was found, said officials, who described her as being in good condition

She was extremely fortunate that she wasnt dragged under by a cranky gator.

I’m glad she is in “good” condition after that ordeal.

Thank God this one ended well.

Congrats to all the searchers who would not give up until the child was found.

Nobody swims or skis in Lake Jessup. It is absolutely infested with gators.

Yup. Lake Jessup is where they dump all the gators that they trap from central Florida residential ponds when they get too big and menacing. When they’re not harvested that is.

not to mention copperheads and all the other poisonous snakes and wild boar -

and the police didn’t ask for volunteers - and NO ONE was searching in the area where this man said he was led to look for her.

Truly, God was watching over this little one.

Apparently not touched by a single alligator or snake. That is a miracle.

Wouldn’t it be something remarkable if she turned out to be one of the rare people who have a rapport with wild animals, kind of like St. Francis? That she could speak to alligators and snakes and they would obey?

I just read up on Lake Jessup. It is a miracle she survived.

“There’s a place called Lake Jessup that lies just 20 minutes from Orlando, in the heart of Seminole County. It’s a beautiful 100,000 year old lake that over 10,000 gators call home. How do so many gators fit in just one lake? Well, the lake comprises almost 10,000 acres and has a circumference of 28 miles; plenty of room for all those gators. In fact, no other lake in America can boast such a large population of gators, that’s why a ride on the lake is sure to guarantee being able to see one of these reptiles in it’s natural habitat.”

The Great Gator Hunt

Florida had a lot of gators in the news this year. The pesky critters kept eating people, and that tends to get our attention. When you think about the numbers, it’s actually quite rare for a gator to attack a human. According to the United States Census Bureau, there are an estimated 17,789,864 in Florida as of 2005. That’s an 11.3% increase since the 2000 census.

Gators don’t have quite the same population. After spending 20 years on the endangered species list (1967 - 1987), the gator population now explodes all over the state. Here are some quick numbers for the Central Florida gator population:

•Lake Jesup: 15,000

•Lake Kissimmee: 8,800

**

The gators dutifully completed their census forms.

Thank you for that. I prayed daily for an Angel’s Hand to protect her and keep her safe.

Some of us on FR will say the girl was ‘lucky’

Some will see a miracle

Some will see the hand of an Angel (or several) protecting an innocent.

I put my bets on an Angel.

Kind of like my odds when I was 18 where I was thrown from my car after over correcting at 60 miles per hour on a country cut off road rarely traveled on a July afternoon. The pavement was probably 140 degrees. Within minutes four off duty paramedics found me while joy riding. They just happened to have their bags with them and had never taken that back road before in their lives. I would have bleed to death but was at the hospital within 20 minutes.

Yeah, my bets are on the Angels.

We prayed for our son (0311, Grunt, one each) on both of his sandbox tours.

His trcuk is attacked, riddled with MG bullet holes - no one is injured. Even with the high speed bail out, all is good.

One night, his position attcked with volleys of RPG fire - they go off “like strings of firecrackers” or fly off into the night in ‘oddball’ fashion. No one injured.

IED goes off (several from what I can peice together) - some close enuf to knock him on his....keester - yet he makes it home.

So, ya, count me in on the Angels....
