...Reps. Don Young (R-Alaska) and Ron Paul (R-Texas) were the first to submit earmark requests in violation of the new [House Republican] moratorium, followed recently by freshman Rep. Joseph Cao (R-La.). All three have asserted the importance of directing money back to their constituents...

Ron Paul's statement on his earmarking practices here. If you're responding to this article, you probably ought to read it first. Then again, some of you will take any opportunity to agree with that great conservative John Boehner (/sarc).

I have not read Ron Paul's excuse.

However, I think there is a conservative defense of earmarks, in many cases.

The bureaucracy, in many cases, does NOT do what it should with taxpayer dollars. Members of Congress are asked to support the various agencies, and promised something in return -— that often does not happen.

Earmarks CAN be a way to keep the unelected bureaucrats in check -— but the practice has been abused.

Looks like typical projection and transference, from the “progressives.”

“but the practice has been abused.”

ya think!

When we are absolutely broke to the fourth generation there is NO conservative excuse for continuing to spend. The fact that some make that argument- and some voters fall for it- gives us but little hope for saving this country.

The only conservative argument needs to be, “Stop the spendind now!” They need to block EVERY bill or go down trying until after the ‘10 elections. Any one Senator can tie up the floor anytime he wants to. Seems like they don’t really want to.

Keep your eye on November. The Rats need to be stopped first. Then the RINOs.
This seems like an article to try to cause disunity.
Let’s win November first.

Ron Paul has a history of loading earmarks into bills that are sure to pass. Then he votes against the bill. He gets everything he wants and then brags he voted against the earmarks.

“This seems like an article to try to cause disunity.”

I don’t even necessarily agree with Ron Paul on this, but I do think he makes a good case for his earmarking, which came as a surprise to me. He’s certainly more convincing in standing FOR earmarking than most of the GOPers standing against it, which seems to be the one thing they can manage to do in the House. Oh, wow, let’s stand tall against earmarking—when we can’t successfully earmark anyway this year! I can’t see John Boehner ever standing against pork if he had a shoulder at the trough.

But re:unity, the tent CAN be too big, you know. What needs to be done to stop the Rats is to get rid of the RINOs. You don’t get rid of pests keeping a do-nothing exterminator on the payroll.

This is not news to most people. I suspect the Paulians will be along any moment to defend Ron’s position and state why this makes him the perfect canidate in 2012.

Ron is one of the top earnarkers in Washington so this news doesn’t shock me in the least.

I'd say that's a hell of a lot better than the policy of voting for a pork-filled bill and putting in the earmarks too, which describes plenty of GOPers over the embarrassment that is the past twenty years. All things being equal, choosing between John Boehner or Ron Paul representing me, I'd take Paul in a heartbeat.

And by the way, I don't live in Paul's district, but I do have a residence in a district represented by a supposedly conservative Republican Congressman. And when I told them I was against earmarks, his staff looked at me like I had three heads. I'm sorry, but I don't believe it's a serious effort on the part of the GOP when they can't even be bothered to hire conservatives.
