In particular, to have his lawyers do "discovery", part of which will be any and all documents related to Obama's birth or citizenship status.

They can make the request but if they can't convince the court of the relevance then the judge will turn them down. This is not a fishing expedition. The defense is entitled to documents relating the the charges Lakin is facing and not everything under the sun.

Since the birth documentation is central to his defense against both charges, I don't see how any sane judge can refuse.

I wouldn’t be so sure.

Lakin probably received a THOROUGH legal analysis of his case/chances, before he took such a radical step....

Unless he’s a fool,(unlikely) he has done his homework and consulted a handful of legal experts.

Discovery is NOT a “fishing expedition”. It is a legal avenue available if needed to prove your case.

No, I am not a lawyer. I am however an adult male with common sense...

Put your self in his shoes..would you take such a radical step without doing your homework.......? I didn’t think so.
