UPI explicitly stated that its reporter made the error in an initial story.

Except they only discovered this so-called error after it was found skeptics. It wasn't a result of any factchecking effort on the part of UPI.

So? Most errors in news stories are discovered by someone outside the news organization.

It wasn't a result of any factchecking effort on the part of UPI.

Way to go captain obvious!

If the UPI internal fackcheckers had caught it, it wouldn't have been printed. It got printed, so obviously their factcheckers missed it.

Being human, they're liable to do that from time to time.
